Re: Family of Michael Eifert & Maria Elisabeth of Ohio
Dear Tom and Pat,
Lots of good information on these pages!I too am a descendant of Michael. My mom, Roberta Eifert of Dayton was the daughter of Albert and granddaughter of Aloys Eifert.
I too read the conflicting stories of the maiden name of Elizabeth. In one version (I think Uncle Gene's) she is listed as Nau.In another version I have her as Broho. So I paid for a search in Baden last year.I had an old letter from Gene in 1972 to my Mom where he mentioned the town Schutterthal, Baden.
My Mom had always said that she was told we came from Kirchegarten. That isn't a town, but it turns out that KircheZARTEN is a town just on the other side of the mountain from Schutterthal.
The researcher found nothing out about the Eiferts, but she did tell me that Broho is not a German name at all. However BORHOE is a very small family in Germany and focused on our little mountain outside of Freiburg! Thus one could hypothesize that the name slowly changed from Borhoe to Broho over time.
The name NAU intrigues me.If Michael did marry another woman, could "Nau or New" have been her nickname? (New Wife?)I don't know how this name came into play, and the Ifort information you have is fascinating.Where did you find the marriage record?
Did you guys know the name means "Zealot"?
