Re: Ralph Elkins (died 1690 in Stafford Co., VA) and the Ashton Family
I do most of my research on colonial Virginia families and it has been my experience that, in general, members of the gentry married people of similar status. Many accredited genealogists have made similar statements. It is not an "absolute," but it is useful as a rule of thumb.
My use of the quote made by G. H. S. King was in response to Cullen Wagoner's post #1687. Mr. Wagoner stated that his source for the spouse of Ralph Elkins (listed as Anne Ashton in his database) was based on the following:
"I have seen it on several different sites on www.ancestry.com
one contact is Annette Brown and she can be reached at
I do not know if this info is correct but seeing it on at least 3 different sites I feel that it is a strong likelyhood of being correct,"
The quote was provided as nothing more than a "caveat emptor" to someone who was relying too heavily on internet resources and too little on actual source records.
