Allen Ellis (1800-1866) was left an orphan when very young. Upon growing to manhood he learned the trade of hatter, and opened a business of his own.
His first son was born in 1833 at Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. At some point in the mid-1830s he moved to Ligonier, Westmoreland County, Penn, where he lived at the time of the 1850 and 1860 US Census.
On account of the invention of hat-making machines, Allen Ellis was forced to retire. He moved his family to McKeesport, Allegheny County, Penn., and died there suddenly of paralysis, in 1868.Most of the remaining family moved to Minnesota.
He was married twice. His second wife was Nancy Squire. I’m aware of 8 children; Charles, James, Millie, Isabel, Emma, Mollie, Odell, Albert. Most of the children are from the second wife.
