Elsley Arrangement of 1654 (Yorkshire)
Hi, hope someone can help with this.A reference in the Fountains estate bibliographic records (this is a National Trust property near Ripon in Yorkshire):
Grace Messenger, daughter of John Messenger of Fountains is "mentioned in the Elsely arrangement of 1654, which was centred on her supposed marriage to William Elsley fl. 1667".
Her two sisters, Elizabeth and Honor were each granted an annuity of 5 pounds per annum and one brother, John, an annuity of 40 pounds per annum.Another brother, Ewens, was to be "fed, clothed and apprenticed until the age of 21 and to be given 100 pounds to set up in trade when 28", also under the terms of this arrangement.Their other brother, William, does not seem to get a mention - but then he inherited the Fountains estate!
Can anyone explain this?
Many thanks in advance
