Hello Paula,I don't know much about Cornelius Emberton, but thought I would mention the little that I do know.He has been a puzzle to me for a number of years.I believe he connects to my family, but have not been able to discover exactly how.The only other Cornelius I know in that time frame is my great-grandfather, Richard Cornelius Emberton born in Monroe County, Kentucky in 1838.Some of this family, including my grandfather, migrated to Arkansas in the 1880's, but other relatives were there earlier. Here is the little I know.
Cornelius Emberton 16 yrs old is in the 1850 census of Monroe County, KY, living with his mother (I presume) Elizabeth Emberton age 38, born in KY.Also a 12 yr old female listed as "sis".I have never been able to determine who his father was.
In 1860 Cornelius is living in Newton County, Arkansas, next door to my great-grandfather's half sister Catherine Emberton Strode. He has a wife named Amy E. born MS, and a three year old son James P. born AR
Cornelius Emberton was in the Civil War, a scout for the Union Army.He enlisted as a private and was discharged as a corporal. He did not live long after the war. I don't know what happened to his first wife, but their children are found living with Jane Henson in the 1870 census - name spelled Emmerton. The children are James 13, Nancy J. 9, and Susan 4.Susan would have been born abt 1866 per the census, so perhaps the first wife died as a result of her birth. He married Catherine Lamar in 1867.Per court papers found in Newton County, Catherine petitioned the court for her share of the estate in June of 1868.I have the papers as well as the military records of Cornelius. The military records do not give much infomation. They do give a description. He was 5 feet 9 inches, light complexion, blue eyes and light hair, a farmer. The court records are hard to read, and I have not found time to transcribe them. That is about all I know. What is your connection to Cornelius or Catherine? If you would like to contact me privately my e-mail is
