ENGEL, Dorathea (Doris)
According to the earliest record found, dated September 1865, Dora ANGEL was then 18 years old and living at Gilles Plains. She was born at Mecklenberg in Germany and had been living in Australia for 11 years, having come to Australia on the ship “Laurence”. I have been unable to find any record of a ship of that name. In 1866 she married Johann Friedrich Wilhelm GROSSET at Nuriootpa in South Australia. According to the record of her marriage her father was Christian ENGEL and her given name was Doris. For some unknown reason different records show her as having several different given names including Dorethea, Theodore, Teedorus, Theodoris, Doris, Dorothea, Dorothea Fredericke, Theodaris, and Dorathea Friedericka. Obviously some of these are just variations in spelling but others are quite different.
A family Birthday Book has her name shown as Dorathea Grosset, born on 29 Sep 1845. Doris died in Jun 1932, at Lower Mitcham and was buried at Hamley Bridge.
Doris and William had seven children, Emilia Emma, Louisa Christina, Frederick Maximillian, Isabella, August William, Annie Martha and Elizabeth Matilda
I have a quite a lot of information about her family in Australia, but have been unable to find details of her birth, or to confirm the names of her parents or where she was born.
I notice that my Doris Grosset used names that are common in your family and would be pleased to hear whether you know of any connection.
