Robert,
Can you tell me who the other Epps son was who married a Cole girl besides Hugh M. Epps who married Elizabeth Cole? I read your statement to that effect in another forum.
The court document Chris Wheeler located pretty well sealed up the fact that Lawrence Epps was my g-g-g-g-grandfather.I keep tripping over your relatives every which way I turn, so I'm just going to fill you in on my family tree once and for all--maybe we'll both find a useful clue.
John Cole and Nancy (Whoever)of Lincoln County, Tennessee (he died 1844) had several children including Elizabeth Cole who married Hugh M. Epps and John Cole who married Elizabeth Painter.John and Elizabeth are buried near Sallisaw, Oklahoma. My dad's cousin remembers Painter cousins coming to visit here in Texas. John and Elizabeth left TN about 1860 and went to AR and then OK.Anyway, Elizabeth's parents, as the court document states, were William Painter and Hepsey Epps.John Cole and Elizabeth Painter named two of their children Lawrence and Hepsey.I heard about Aunt Hepsey all my life. Lawrence Cole got killed in OK in 1907.
Another of John and Nancy's children was Anderson Cole who married Lucy Easter Cummins.Anderson is living close to his brother John Cole Jr. (and Elizabeth Painter) on the 1860 census Independence County, AR--where my grandparents grew up.
John and Elizabeth had my great-grandfather Franklin Price Cole, who married Alice Nora Pierce of MO.I sent for the SS application of Alice's sister, and the sister had listed their mother as Kate Lewellen (Catherine).Census records show she was born in Indiana, but the family may have migrated to MO>AR.
I was researching my LITTLE family of Tallahatchie County, MS, and found Gilbert Epps living nearby.Small world. My LITTLE grandma had a son who married a Holt.See what I mean? Every time I do a search, your name comes up.
In that other post (Hedgepeth?) you mentioned the oral history of the Cole family re Jesse James.Don't know about that, but here's the story Franklin Price Cole told my dad.One day FP and family were coming in from the fields for dinner when a group of men rode up and asked to water their horses.FP asked them to stay over for dinner, and they did. They rode off later, and when Alice began to clear the table, she found a twenty dollar gold piece under one of their plates.A few minutes later the sherrif rode up with a possee--looking for the Jesse James gang.
Both Hugh M. Epps/Elizabeth Cole and Anderson Cole/Lucy Easter Cummins have children buried at Stone Cemetery in Lincoln County where John and Nancy Cole are buried.Hugh himself is buried there. Also PROSSER, STONE and SHERWOOD.I have no idea who they are.
I should know the answer to the question with which I began this post, but I can't remember another son of Lawrence Epps who married a Cole besides Hugh M. I do know that Florence Cole, daughter of Francis M. Cole (who was a brother to my John Cole who married Elizabeth Painter) married an Epps.Francis M. Cole's family went to OK, too.Only my line chose Texas.
Sincerely,
Gene Kathryn (Cole) Johnson
