Re: Joseph Ernewein of Soufflenheim Alsace
Franco-Prussian War was 1870-1871 (time frame changes if you include post war revolution(s) within France, the Commune, etc. As you know, Alsace has been a political football between its German princes ( of the Holy Roman Empire) and France, which aspires to the natural boundaries of France, i.e., the left bank of the Rhine River. Alsace became French via Treaty of Westphalia and later bought in blood in Revolutionary and Napoleonic period circa 1789-1815. The "repatriation" of Alsace to the German Empire in 1871 was part of the war spoils levied against France by Bismark. By the way, old Otto wanted Alsace, as it was naturally Germanic, but did not want Lorraine, as it was more French. People use the term " Alsace-Lorraine" like we would say "South Carolina" !!! NOT,
these are two different areas. Alsace itself is really two parts, the Haut Rhine and the Bas Rhine ( Upper and Lower Rhine River".Oh, guess we are about 3rd cousins or so!
