Re: Eskews of Rockbridge County, VA
I recently found a court case from Nelson County regarding the divorce of Shelton Wright and Paulina Jones.Several in our family had always wondered what happened with this couple and why did they divorce.
When reading the case I was surprised to see that Shelton Wright had charged his wife with adultery and named John C. Shields of Lynchburg as the other party. It was a kind of nasty divorce and some real bad things were said!
Paulina Jones Wright however sought the divorce and was awarded her petition of divorce in 1846.She said that Shelton Wright had said so many vile and malicious statements about her that her standing in the community was destroyed and she feared for her safety! She then moved her children and herself into her father's home and lived there until her death.I looked for depositions of all of her witnesses and John C. Shields but did not find them.
I know that John Camden Shields lived in Lynchburg and was wondering if you had any idea when he might have relocated there?I haven't found any other Shields named John C. in that area other than him.
Had you ever come across this information in your research or was it passed down by chance? We never knew specifics, only that it was painful for so many folks.
