My great-grandfather, Edward Gowing Etches, emigrated to Winnipeg from London in 1899. He took the surname "Etches" only on emigrating, having been born Edward Manley Gowing in 1870, son of Joseph Etches Gowing. Joseph Etches Gowing was so named in honour of his uncle John Etches, husband of Elizabeth Gowing. The family seems to have maintained quite an attachment to the Etches surname; Edward's brother Martin Gowing is even registered as "Martin Etches" in the English birth records.
