Charles Forney (in my opinion) made a serious error when he assigned Margaret Smith as a second wife to Jacob Frederick Ettleman above. Margaret Smith should have been assigned to Jacob Ettleman the son of Jacob Frederick Ettleman who was born in 1794.
In a Mormon publication titled “EARLY BRANCHES OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER-DAY SAINTS 1830-1850” by Lyman D. Platt
In this publication Platt identifies Henry Ettleman b. September 06, 1798, , son of Jacob Frederick Ettleman; Jacob Ettleman b. 1794, son of Jacob Frederick Ettleman; and Phillip Ettleman b. March 02, 1791 son of Jacob Frederick Ettleman
Phillip Ettleman, Jacob Ettleman, and Henry Ettleman as residents of the Seneca, NY congregation of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints. Even though Henry Ettleman was the youngest of the three brothers he has the title of “Elder”. This would suggest he might have been the first to convert or had been in the Church the longest. These three brothers are listed separately with their respective families.

Jacob Frederick Ettleman was born September 14, 1757 he died Abt. 1846 at Nishnabotna Valley, Iowa, as his son Henry was bringing him to join the rest of the family in Kanesville. The account of this trip is on page 721 of “Forney’s Five Family Records”. There is no mention of a mother in this account. Jacob Frederick Ettleman was married to Anna Clara Benner, October 13, 1782 at Indian Creek, Montgomery County, PA. She was the daughter of John Benner and Mary Magdalene Bos. Anna Clara Benner died about 1829. There is no proof he remarried other than what was stated in the “Forney’s Five Family Records”. Charles stated incorrectly that he later married Margaret Smith who was born March 10, 1800. Had they truly been married Margaret Smith would have been 43 years junior to Jacob Frederick Ettleman. This is just not reasonable. The above record shows a Jacob Ettleman who was in fact married to a Margaret. Four of their children are listed Sarah Ann Ettleman b. March 12, 1832; George Ettleman b. September 03, 1833; Susan Ettleman b. November 10, 1836; Mary Ellen Ettleman b. February 03, 1840. If these children were truly those of Jacob Frederick Ettleman, born September 14, 1757 he would have fathered Ellen Ettleman b. February 03, 1840 at the age of 83.
Charles Forney simply got the two Jacobs mixed up.
Charles also assumed that the parents of Johann Karl Forney were German emigrants and they were Johannes Farny and Barbara Gautchin. He based this on the fact that a baptismal found for of Johann Karl Forney was written in German. First of all if there was an infant baptismal paper at all (and I believe there was) the fact it was written in German is no surprise at all. Services for the German Baptist Church were typically conducted in German. We also know they could not have been Anabaptists. I have a pretty good idea where they came from but as I have no concrete proof at this time I will hold that in reserve.
