Look at the 1870 Virginia Census for York Count Page 533. There you will find John J. Hovey Sr living with Charles Post and family. One of the Post children is Alice age 17 born New York. Fast forward to the 1900 Census York County Page 225. There you will find your John J. Hovey Jr and wife living with one Alice Townsend age 47 widow. John Jr is listed as her son and his wife as her daughter-in-law. Their son John J. is listed as her grandson. With all that I would say John J. Sr's wife was Alice Post. As for Mary Ewan's parents the only Ewan I can find in York County is a Beriah Ewan born NJ. His eldest son William is born 1876 in Virginia. IN later censuses Mary's parents are shown as born NJ.
