I have been asked by a descendant of Christopher Stophel Eye to help him research his family.
So far, with the help of many of you on this board, I have determined that Christopher emigrated to the US in October 1754, arriving in Wilmington Delaware aboard the ship Recovery. He was listed as Christopher Au, along with two other Au's, who have been suggested as his brothers [Frederick, Gerrick]. There is also indications from the ship record that Christopher was a Palatine, suggesting his birth location to be in Wurttemberg or nearby states.
There is also an indication on the ship record that the Master has recorded all male persons over the age of 16.However, the information obtained in various locations suggests that Christopher was born in 1744, which would only make him 10 or 11 years old when he arrived in the US.This suggests that perhaps one of the other Au's listed may have been his father, instead of his brother?I wonder if anyone has obtained a birth / christening record for Christopher and been able to determine his 'true' name in German and those of his parents?
I have not been able to secure the book written by Walter Eye on the Eye family, as I live in California and the nearest copy is in a library in Kansas. For those of you who have this book, I would appreciate knowing what information is contained in the book, relating to Christopher, and where copies of the book might be purchased.
I have learned that Christopher arrived in Augusta County in 1758, settling in the Blackthorn Valley, near Sugar Grove. The Pendleton County property books show him acquiring acreage along the Blackthorn Creek throughout the late 1700s.
There are also records of his service in the Revolution, as a member of Hull's, 2nd Battalion of the Augusta Militia in 1779 and his participation in the Yorktown Campaign. Has there been any registration or records sent to the DAR / SAR?
I have some records relating to his 10 children, such as their names, birth, death and some marriage information. Also, his will and directions to the Eye Cemetery have been kindly provided by members of this forum.
I am aware that Christopher is buried in the Eye Cemetery on Dry Run Road, near Mitchell, perhaps overlooking the Eye's Run / Stophel's Run / Stauffles Run.
Can any of you help with more detailed information on Christopher Eye?
