Re: Ezekiels in Newfoundland Canada
My grandmother was Johannah Ezekiel and my great grandfather was Patrick Ezekiel, born about 1852 and died in 1918 in Corner Brook. Patrick married Mary Power. I suspect he came from Harbour Main however it is difficult to make the connection as many of the Parish records were destroyed in a fire. As well there appears to be more than one line of Ezekiels in Corner Brook however even that is murky. However if you go to the Newfoundland Genweb site or the Newfoundland Grand Banks site you will see some information on the Ezekiels of Harbour Main. The lore is that the Ezekiels came from Exeter in Devon England. A check of English genealogical sites does reveal Ezekiels in that part of England. Many are Jewish but there appears to be others of a Christian background (converts from Judasim?). A local researcher tells me that the Ezekiels of England may actually be originally from Spain where they were expelled during some period of persecution. About 5 years ago there was a local genealogical show on radio where once every 2 weeks a well known genealogist would come on and go over a local surname. In his first show he reviewed the name Ezekiel claiming that it was the most interesting and intriging name in Newfoundland.
Hope this helps
