Slaying of Woman, Guest, Laid to Booze and Jealousy
A coroner's jury today recommended that Fran Martin, Burnham bootlegger, known also as Frank Huck, to be held to the grand jury on two charges of murder for killing Mrs. Harriet Fadler, 34-year old divorcee and Jack Wittingham, 8110 Ellis avenue.
Crazed with booze and jealousy, Martin invaded Mrs. Fadler's home at 7925 Rhodes avenue late Saturday night, shot her and Whittingham to death and seriously wounded her daughter, Nadine 16, and William B. Brewster, 8200 Ellis Avenue, a friend of Nadine.
Refuses to Testify.
Martin took the stand at the inquest conducted by Deput Coroner Jacob Schewel at the county morgue, but refused to testify on advise of counsel, after ansering one question.
"What is your business?" asked Schewel.
"Whiskey business," replied Martin.
"No business," shot in his attorney, Charles S. Dougherty, and the record was made so to read.
Miss Fadler and Brewster are in the Jackson Park hospital.Attorney Dougherty agreed that their statements, as well as Martin's mad to Capt. Hugh McCarth, might be admitted and the captain read them.
Admitts Jealousy Was Motive.
In his confession, made last night after he had recovered from the drinking debauch that had sent him on his murderous rampage, Martin admitted that jealousy and overindulgence in liquor had prompted his act.
Mrs. Fadler, twice divorced, was sitting in the living room of her apartment when Martin burst in and became enraged at the sight of the two men visitors.Mrs. Fadler was slain as she sought to barricade herself in a bedroom. Nadine was wounded when she ran into the line of fire in an effort to shield her mother.
Martin said he had been giving Mrs. Fadler $400 a month and became suspicious that she was trying to "give him the air", when he learned that she was away from her home three days last week.He admitted that he had gone to the house for the purpose of killing her and then ending his own life.
Shot Girl Accidentally.
"I shot at Wittingham and Brewster when they tried to get my gun", he said.He said that the shooting of the girl was accidental.
Herman G. Fadler of Lansing, diverced husband of Mrs. Fadler, said that Martin, who was also known under the name of Huck, had been responsible for their separation more than a year ago.He said that Nadine was the daughter of Mrs. Fadler by a previous marriage.
The following article is from a Clinton County Newspaper later in the same week.
FORMER CHARLOTTE GIRL MURDERED,
By Jealous Suitor - Daughter is Also Shot - Funeral Yesterday
Monday's Chicago papers contained a sensational article chronicling the fatal shooting of Mrs. Amanda Harriet Fadler, a former Charlotte girl, the wounding of her 17 year old daughter, the murder of a male guest and the wounding of another.
According to the articles she had been divorced from her husband, H.G. Fadler, and she and her daughter Miss Nadine were entertaining two men friends in an apartment in Chicago.Nadine saw a man named Martin across the street and expecting trouble told her Mother and the doors were locked.Martin crashedhis way through the back door, entering with a revolver in his hand and attempted to shoot Mrs. Fadler.Nadine threw her arms around her mother's neck to protect her and received a revolver shot wound in the neck.Mrs. Fadler fled to her bedroom to escape from Martin, but the assassin found her and the shot killed her instantly. The two men guests grappled with the murderer but he freed his gun arm, killed one of them and wounded the other.
The reason assigned for the crime is that Martin was a jealous suiter who had been giving his victim $650 a month for her support. He was formerly a partner of Mr. Fadler. He was captured by police after a chase of two miles.
Amanda Harriet Boldt was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. August Boldt and was born in Charlotte in May 1896.Some eighteen years ago she married Garret Abel and later divorced. One daughter, Miss Nadine, was born to this union.Later she was married to H.G. Fadler of Chicago and had lived in Chicago ever since.
She is survived by her daughter, Miss Nadine, one brother, F. P. Boldt of Charlotte: two half brothers and two half sisters, Chris Mohr of Creston, Otto Mohr, Mrs. Ferdinand Christiansen of Charlotte, and Mrs. Justus Berg of Preston.
The remains were brought to Clinton and the funeral held at the Shadduck undertaking parlor yesterday with sermon by Rev. Biederman of Preston.Interment was made in Hickory Hill Cemetery at Charlotte.
