Carroll did not exist as a county until 1842, when it was formed from part of Grayson Co. (later part of Patrick Co. was also added to Carroll). Sylvester Marion Shockley was born in Grayson Co. and died in Carroll Co., but may have resided in the same location his entire life.
It gets complicated getting the correct county because new counties were formed during the early years of settlement. As I've learned more about Virginia county formation, I've tried to correct mistakes in my own records but know that I haven't caught them all.
Carroll Co. was formed from Grayson Co.; Grayson was formed from Wythe Co.; Wythe was formed from Montgomery Co.; Montgomery was formed from Fincastle Co. (which no longer exists); Fincastle was formed from Botetourt Co.; and Botetourt was formed from Augusta Co. Although there were more counties in the progression prior to Augusta Co., this is about the time that the earliest settlement began in the area.
Initially, I thought my ancestors were constantly moving but then I realized that it was the counties that were changing.
There is a simple chart with dates of Carroll's ancestor counties on the Carroll Co., VA GenWeb page (scroll down to the bottom of the page) at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~vacarrol/carroll.htmhttp://www.rootsweb.com/~vacarrol/carroll.htm
