I suggest the book "FAVER and KINDRED" which gives the descendants of John FAVER who was in VA about 1748. It was written by Alma Y. Carroll. In the book she discusses at least some of the slave holdings of the family.
Before emancipation most slaves were known by a single name. When they were emancipated they needed full names for many legal purposes.They often added the surname of their former owner for this purpose.
