My Mother, Ruby Lucille McConnaughey Knight did not know her grandmother; only a few stories.Mom's father, Charles Franklin McConnaughey never spoke of his mother. If her name came up in conversation, "Frank" left the room. My mom remembers a pix of her grandmother; a beautiful woman in a long white dress.[guess that it was a wedding pix.]
Her grandmother's name was Clara Shafer, born 10/11/1871 in Missouri, married Ira McConnaughey 10/13/1889 at Metz, Vernon co., MO-no death info.Ira remarried in 1903, so Clara was either dead by then, or they were divorced.Clara was Ira's second wife.
One story is that Clara placed Ira's daughter from his first marriage on the railroad tracks. The jist of the account is that Clara had anger issues.
The story about my grandfather Frank is that Clara put Frank in a snowdrift when he was a baby.As a result, he had a bad fever which caused his eardrums to burst causing him to be hard-of-hearing all his life.
My mother's cousin told me that Clara left "when Frank was still in dresses."I presume that means he was an infant.Frank was born 3/6/1897 in Dunklin co., MO.Ira had an older brother who had a sawmill in the bootheel of Missouri.Apparently Ira went there for a couple of years to work.Other than that period of time, Frank lived in Vernon co., MO until late in his life.
Clara's parents were Peter Shafer 1839 Knox co. OH-d 12/29/1913 Milo, Vernon, MO, buried Olive Branch Cem. in Vernon co., MO married 11/25/1860 in Cass co., MO to Louisa Jane Feeback born 1844 Nicholas co., KY-d 1/1/1879 Lafayette co., MO, buried Greenton cem., Lafayette co., MO.
When I first found out that Clara'a mother was named Feeback, I wondered if our family was related to Russ Feeback; a well-known auctineer in Belton, Cass, MO.
Louisa was the oldest child of William Feeback 5/10/1823 Nicholas co., KY-d 9/5/1871 Cass co., MO married 7/11/1842 Nicholas co., KY toSidney Ritchey Nov 1821 Nicholas co., KY-d June 1861 Pettis co., MO, buried 6 miles south of Sedalia, MO.
William Feeback was the son of Gilbert Feeback 1/5/1791 Nicholas co., KY-d 7/3/1872 Cass co., MO, buried Index cemetery Cass co., MO married 1/5/1815 Nicholas co., KY to Amelia P. Ritchie 11/15/1798 Nicholas co., KY-d Mar 1879 Cass co., MO, buried by her husband.
I was fortunate to find Ed Schaffer in North Carolina who supplied me with a picture of Clara Shafer at about age 10.She looks like mom's aunt, Cora Etta McConnaughey. The young Clara had what I thought to be Indian features.
I am more interested in determining the Ritchie/Richey lineage.
