Help:Christian Fenter with Lewis & Clark
Has anyone found proof that Christian FENTER joined the Lewis & Clark Expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase and the area between the Mississippi and Columbia Rivers? History records the expedition left St. Louis, Missouri on 14 May 1804, and returned to St. Louis 23 September 1806.
In a photo copy of page 20 of Carl E. Taliaferro's book, "The Christian Fenter Family," I found the following a reference about Christian FENTER (son of Bastian and Barbara FENTER):
"The company Christian Fenter joined was the Lewis and Clark Expedition which took several years to explore the region between the Mississippi and Columbia Rivers."
On the same page, just above this statement the author says:
"In 1804, Christian Fenter and other members of his family left North Carolina, returning to Virginia to meet other relatives who made up a party of immigrants heading West to the newly formed Louisiana Purchase." They traveled along the Ohio River and settled in St. Genevieve, MO. It was said that when Christian arrived, he didn't have much money. He decided to join the expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase, was paid in advance, and used the money to purchase a farm in the Bois Bruile River Bottom District of St. Genevieve County.
The author also states there were Missouri records of Christian Fenter purchasing 300 acres from a James Hunter for $300 in St. Genevieve County, situated on the Mississippi River in March of 1805. Also, that in 1808 Christian Fenter filed a claim for "600 arpents of land situated on the Bois Bruile River Bottom."
I would like to know the source for the family lore that Christian FENTER was a member of the Lewis & Clark Expedition. I have checked the list of names of those who went on the expedition and have not found Christian FENTER listed anywhere.
I found the following book in the Astoria Public Library, Astoria, Oregon: "The Men of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, a biographical roster of fifty-one members and a composite diary of their activities from all known sources" by Charles G. Clarke, 1970. This book listed 7 other members who joined after the expedition was on the way, and again no Christian FENTER is listed.
The Astoria Public Library also had 7 volumes in which the original diaries were published, along with an 8th volume of maps, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
