I've just now come across this posting. But I think you're the Michael that I've since corresponded with.
Yes, this John Cooley has been attributed with a marriage to Elizabeth Firmin, but that goes back to a much discredited book. The source for that assertion actually says that William Cooley married Elizabeth. All records, including a recently discovered family bible, support that fact.
Descendants for William Cooley and our John Cooley had entirely different DNA. Of course, Hamil, who did the research for the book in the 30s, couldn't know this. This error in the marriage is one of perhaps scores of errors she made in her research.
I may have already pointed you to this article, expected to be published in abbreviated form in the next newsletter of the Cooley Family Association of America.
