I believe you are correct that George Ireland is the father of Robert Alexander, George Washington and Caroline Emily. He was 10 years younger than Joanna by the census.

Some records seem to assume George H. Ireland was a Fernald probably because the children later went by the Fernald name.

The 1855 Census of Massachusetts lists George H. Ireland and has Joanna and children listed with the Ireland name.
FamilySearch has a free database.
