The Name and Family of Finch
The name of FINCH, according to some historians was originally used as a nickname and had some characteristic of its first bearers which called to mind the bird of that name, while others are of the opinion that it is a shortened form of VINCENT. It is probable that neither theories are correct and the family was originally of NORMAN ancestry. According to this later theory the family went into England at an early date, and a descendent of the line latter settled at Finch, in the county of Kent, and adopted the name of his place of residence as his surname. It is found on ancient English and early American records in the various spellings of VYNCH, FYNCHE, FYNCH, FINCHE, FINCHand others, of which the last mentioned is that most generally used in America today.
According to most authorities, the first of the family in England was Herbert FITZ(meaning "son of") PETER, who was a descendent of the Counts of Vermandois, who traced their ancestry from one Pippen de Landen of the 6th century A.D., through eight generations to another Pippen or Pippin, Count of Vermandois in the 9th century, from the above mentioned Herbert Fitz Peter.
Herbert Fitz Peter probably accompanied William the Conqueror into England in 1066 and he married Emma de Blois and they had a son named Herbert Fitz Herbert, who was Chamberlain to King Henry the first about the beginning of the 12th century. He married Julia Corbett and they had: Stephen, Herbert, and William. Herbert married Adela Corbet and they had Robert, Henry and Herbert ( recorded as "fitz Herbert"). Herbert married Lucia, daughter of the Earl of Hereford and they had a son named Peter Fitz Herbert. By his second wife, Matilda, he had a son named Matthew, who became Lord of Warblington and Sheriff of Sussex and Surrey. Matthew had sons named John & Herbert. This last-mentioned Herbert was slain in the year 1245 and left a son, Herbert Fitz Herbert, who married the heiress of the Manor of Finch, County Kent, and was the father of a son named "VINCENT FINCH". His desendents for several generations used these form and the name of FINCH finally came into general used as the family surname.
This Vincent Finch, alias Herbert, married Joan Salerne and they had John, Henry & Joan. Henry resided in County Sussex and married Parnell Allard and they had: Vincent & Nicholas. Of these two sons, Vincent married Joan Passenden and they had a son named Vincent. This last Vincent married Isabel Cralle and they had: William, John and several daughters. The families of William & John will be mentioned in turn.
William Finch, elder son of Vincent & Isabel, married Agnes Row, and they had Henry & John. Henry married Alice Belknap and they had Sir William Finch of County Kent. Sir William married the Widow Elizabeth (nee Crowner) Lovelace, of Laurence (died with issue).
Sir Thomas and Richard had further children by his second wife, Catherine Gainsford, of Erasmus and Vincent.
Sir Thomas, eldest surviving son of Sir William of Kent married Catherine Moyle and children by her of: Sir Moyle, Sir Henry (father of Sir John, Sir Nathaniel, and Edward), Thomas, and Jane, of whom Sir Moyle married Sir Theophilus, Sir Thomas, John (father of John & William), William, Sir Heneage, and Francis, of whom Sir Heneage married Frances Bell, and they had: Sir Heneage, Francis, Sir John, and Elizabeth. Sir Heneage made his home in County Middlesex.
John Finch, younger son of Vincent & Isabel married Elizabeth Sewers, and they had: William, from County Kent, married Ellen Hollingbrooke and they had a son named, John who married Agnes Ellis. Also a sons named Herbert and Thomas. Herbert had numerous issue, although his records are not complete and Thomas married Joyce Finch (daughter of one John Finch of Kent) and they had: Ralph, (who married Bridget Potter and they had: Thomas, Richard, and Michael). Of these, Thomas married Elizabeth Worley at the end of the 16th century and they had: Thomas, Herbert, James and Elizabeth and Richard married Mary Tonge and they had: John, William, Anthony and several daughters.
