Mark S. Finigan/Finnicum d. 1873 MO
I am looking for descendants and other family of Mark S. Finicum.
Charlotte Eberhardt of Athens, GA recently sent me what appears to be the final record of my GGgrandfather, Mark. She found a record for Mark in "Tombstone Inscriptions of Jasper County, Missouri". In the Georgia City Cemetery is listed "FINIGAN, Mark S. 1 Jan. 1800-6 Feb. 1873"
On the same page is an entry for what I believe to be his daughter, Fannie. It says, "ALEXANDER, Fannie 1846-1870. wife of Wm. C."
Below is what I previously knew about the family of Mark S. Finicum/Finnicum/Finigan.
Life and Family of
Mark S. Finicum
Mark Finicum was born near the end of 1799 in Pennsylvania, probably in Washington County in the far Southwest of that state. His parents were Fanney and William Finicum.
An officer of a county genealogy society in Ohio sent me a wonderful letter full of information about the Finicum/Finnicum family. This information came to me from Mrs. Sara Finnicum of 2297 Roswell Rd. S.W., Carrollton, OH 44615. She said about the source,
"There was supposed to have been a Finnicum family Bible printed in 1814 & last known owner - a Wm. Finnicum of New Rumley, Harr. Co., Oh. - No one knows where it is today.
I've never seen it! but some of the info printed about it regarding the family has checked out such as the tombstones in Simmons Ridge Cem. & on my husband's line."
"According to the 'supposed' Bible info Wm. & Frances/Fanney had 12 children. It says - She was 20 & he 28 at time of their marriage but gives no date or place of such event. The children listed are as follows:
1) Ann b. 26 May 1789 d. 12 Sept. 1816

Sara also sent this additional information:
"In 1829, Wm. died & is buried with his wife in Simmon's Ridge Cemetery Loudon Twp. Carroll Co. Ohio. (This would've been Harrison Co. in 1829 yet)
His stone is very readable for having been put there in 1829 - I've seen it. It reads -
FINNICUM In memory of William d. 8 July 1829 ae 66 yrs 4 ms 14 ds.
next to his stone:
FINICUM Frances Wife of Wm. Finicum d. 28 Oct. 1848 ae 75 yrs.
This stone is very weathered & was chalked to read.
Our 'genie' chapter copied & included this cemetary in our Vol II Lee & Loudon Twp. Cemetery book."
The family of Mark's father, William FINNICUM, is listed in the U.S. Census of 1800 in Hopewell Twp., Washington Co., PA. I found the entry on page 56. In William's household there was one free white male under ten years of age and one more of ten years and under sixteen; there was one free white male of 26 under 45; there were two free white females under ten years, one of 16 under 26 years and one of 26 under 45.
Mark's family was still in Washington County in 1810. William FINNICUM is listed in the U.S. Census of 1810 in Hopewell Twp., Washington Co., PA. I found the entry on microfilm reel #57, p. 53. In William's household there was one free white male under ten years of age and three more of ten years and under sixteen; there was one free white male of 45 and upward; there were two free white females under ten years and one of twenty-six years and under 45; there were a total of 8 in the household.
By 1820 the family had moved to Ohio. William FINICUM is listed in the U.S. Census of 1820 in Rock Twp., Harrison Co, Ohio, page 127. His household contains one free white male under 10, one male 10 under 16, one male 16 under 26, one male 45 & upwards, one free white female under 10, one female 10 under 16, one female 16 under 26 and one female 45 & upwards; one was engaged in agriculture and none in commerce or manufacturing.
As a young man, Mark spent some time in Arkansas. Mark FENNICUM, was listed in a tax roll of 1824 in Independence Co., Arkansas.
Mark married Phebe Scott 18 Nov. 1828, in Jefferson Co., Ohio, in the Ohio River Valley.
The family of Mark FINNECUM was enumerated in Springfield Twp., Jefferson Co., Ohio (p. 64) in the U.S. Census of 1830. There was one male age 30-40, one female under 5, and one female 20-30 years old. The little girl may be Elizabeth Finicum who shows up with conflicting ages in later records. Mark's daughter, Lucy Finicum, appears to have been born after this census was taken.
Mark and his family appear to have moved to Richland County in North Central Ohio by 1840. Mark Finicum bought land there from David Snider and his wife Catherine Snider on the sixth day of March 1837.
This entry from the 1840 U.S. Census from Washington Township, Richland County, Ohio (p.261) lists Mark FINACUM as the householder. There was one male age 15-20, one male age 40-50 (Mark), one female under age 5 (Mary), one female age 5-10 (Lucy), one female age 10-15 (Elizabeth) and one female age 30-40 (Phebe). Three entries before the household of Mark Finicum the census lists Ebenezer Scott; this may have been the brother of Mark's wife, Phebe Scott Finicum. The next entry after Mark Finicum's is one for the household of William Scott; this household consisted of a male age 70-80 and a female age 60-70. This William may have been the father of Mark's wife. The next entry after William's is one for the household of Silas Scott; he may also have been the brother of Phebe Scott Finicum.
Researchers at the Richland County Genealogical Society near Mansfield, Ohio found several family names in the RICHLAND COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDS p. 392, in the Little Washington Cemetery. Next to each other are:
The researcher noted that this is the only Finicum in the index. Elsewhere on p. 392 in the Little Washington Cemetery are:
SCOTT William d 6 Sep 1854
SCOTT phebe w/o Silas d 16 Mar 1845, 29-4-5
John Finicum is most probably the son of Mark's listed in the 1840 census. The William Scott who died is probably Phebe's father and not her brother.
Land transactions from the Richland County Ohio Deed Index show that Mark was selling land there in 1840 and 1847; the two William Scotts who bought the land may be the father and brother of Mark's wife, Phebe Scott Finicum.
This entry from the 1850 U.S. census lists Mark's family. The entry is from Washington Twp, Richland County, Ohio (p. 221).
Mark Finicum is 49 in age, male, born in Pa.
Phebe is 45 in age, female, born in Va.
Lucinda is 17 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Mary is 14, female, born in Ohio.
Jason is 9, male, born in Ohio.
Francis A. is 4, sex is unclear, born in Ohio.
Martha is 3, female, born in Ohio.
Elizabeth Barnes is 30, female, born in Ohio, married within the census year.
Jaywellan is 3/12 year old, male, born in Ohio.
The Elizabeth Barnes in the 1850 census entry is probably Mark's oldest daughter. Her marriage to E. J. Barnes is recorded in Richland County, Ohio Marriages 1813 - 1871 compiled by Mohican Area Genealogists Interested in Computers. According to that report, "Elizabeth FINICUM married Ebenezer BARNES 11 Aug. 1849".
Elizabeth appears to have died in 1856. There is an entry that appears to be hers in the Cemetery Inventory for Wapello Co. Iowa collected by the WPA in the early 1930's. Elizabeth Barnes is reported as died 1856 at age 25 and buried in the Westview Cemetery. The age recorded for Elizabeth in the 1850 census would indicate that she was born about 1820. The age of this Elizabeth Barnes indicates that she was born about 1830. The age of Ebenezer "E. J." Barnes leads me to suspect that the Elizabeth Finicum who he married was born after 1828 since an earlier birth makes her older than he was.
Mark's wife, Phebe, died sometime after 1852. Researchers at the Richland County Genealogical Society near Mansfield, Ohio have narrowed down the period within which Phebe's death may have occurred. She was alive 21 March 1853 when she signed a deed with her husband, Mark Finicum, selling two town lots in Washington [Village], Washington Twp., Richland County, Ohio. This is the last transaction from or to Mark Finnicum in the Richland County, Ohio Recorder's Office INDEX OF DEEDS, vol. 1, 1814-1855 (or in vol. 2, 1855 to 1876).
Phebe Scott Finicum appears to have died in Iowa in 1854. The W.P.A. Cemetery Inventory for Wapello Co. Iowa has listings for the Westview Cemetery, Kirkville, Wapello County, Iowa. Phebe (Mrs. M. S.) Finegan is listed as died 19 May 1854 at age 49. The Kirkville area borders the Mahaska County where Mark's family was enumerated 1856.
Information sent to the Jefferson County Genealogical Society in 1986 by Sam Butler may explain the death of Phebe in 1854. The page in the FITZSIMMONS Family History File from The Genealogy of James Lyon Fitzsimmons indicates that Elizabeth Failor, wife of Patrick Fitzsimmons, "died 2 October 1854 in Mahaska County, Iowa. She died in the cholera epidemic of 1854 which hit part of Iowa." This information also indicates that Elmirah Fitzsimmons married Robert Ross. "He died in the cholera epidemic on 1854, 12 June." Mary Jane Fitzsimmons "married John Paul, he died in the cholera epidemic." Joseph Fitzsimmons "married first to Mary ? she died in the cholera epid.". (This Joseph Fitzsimmons later married Mark's daughter, Mary Paul Finicum, in Kansas.)
By 1856 Phebe was dead and 21 year old Lucy was the oldest female in a household that included 6 year old Jay Wellan Barnes. They were enumerated in an 1856 Mahaska Co. Iowa Census for Harrison Twp.; on page 816 is Mark FINICUM's family.
M S Finicum is 55 in age, male, widowed, born in Pennsylvania, Farmer, Native voter, not indicated as Owner of Land.
Lucinda Finicum is 21 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Mary Finicum is 19 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Jason Finicum is 15 in age, male, born in Ohio.
Francis A. Finicum is 10 in age, male, born in Ohio.
Irene Finicum is 8 in age, female, born in Ohio.
J W Barnes is 6 in age, male, born in Ohio.
Mark and his family moved from Iowa to Kansas before 1860. A History of Kansas published in 1883 mentions Mary Finnicum in its coverage of Oskaloosa Township. "In the spring of 1857 the first school, one paid for by subscription, was taught by Miss Mary Finnicome, in a frame building of native lumber. The house was simply a rough board enclosure, and was situated in the eastern part of town. In now forms a part of T. H. Noble's store. Miss Finnicome afterward became the wife of Joseph Fitsimons."
Mary's marriage was recorded in this entry from "Marriage Licenses of Record Jefferson Co. KS 1855-1930 by the Jefferson Co. Gen. Soc.".

The First Hundred Years of Jefferson County Kansas contains a picture of "THE FRONTIER HOUSE, Two blocks north of the court house, Oskaloosa". It notes, "Its stone portion was built about 1858, owned by Mark S. Finnicum. In 1864 it passed to Wm. A. Coy, register of deeds and later all round merchant. In 1867 opened as a hotel by S. S. Cole."... Rose E. Balao of the Jefferson County Genealogical Society sent me The First Hundred Years of Jefferson County Kansas and pages and pages of other great information.
Following is the census entry for Mark's family from the 1860 U. S. Census. This was a Census of Jefferson Twp., Jefferson Co., State of Kansas, enumerated 20th day of Sept. 1860; the post office is Crooked Creek; on page 37 is Mark FINICUM's family.
Mark Finnicum is 58 in age, male, Farmer, born in Pennsylvania.
Mary " is 22 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Jason " is 19 in age, male, Farm Laborer, born in Ohio.
Frances " is 15 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Irene " is 13 in age, female, born in Ohio.
Andrus McKinney is 22 in age, male, Farmer, born in Ohio.
Maria " is 21 in age, female, born in Pennsylvania.
Mark's daughter, Irene Finnicum, married in Jasper County, Missouri. The entry from Marriage Books C and D from Jasper County, Missouri, records the marriage of "Rice, G Irene Finnicum Sept. 23, 1870 p.13 H. H. Ashbaugh, Min.". I believe that she is the Mrs. Irene Rice who later lived with Lucy Finicum Barnes Ewbank's family in The Dalles, Oregon. She died 17 Dec. 1926 in Kansas City, Mo. Irene is buried in the Olathe cemetery in Johnson County, Kansas; she is buried in the same lot with her sister, Mary Fitzsimmons and with Joseph and Minnie Fitzsimmons. Also buried in the Olathe City Cemetery are the daughters of Mary Finicum and Joseph Fitzsimmons - Minnie Belle, Georgia Anna "Georgie", Maude Edna "Ed" and Eva Irene.
Mark's son, Jason, who appears in Mark's household in the 1860 census, soon afterwards signed up to be a soldier. His military records contain a "Certificate of Disability for Discharge" from the Army of the United States. This certificate says,
"Jason L. Finnicum Corpl of Lieut E. J. Barnes Company, E, of the Fifth (5) Regiment of United States Kansas Cav, was enlisted by Lieut Bowmer," ... "at Fort Leavenworth on the 15th day of October 1861, to serve three years; he was born in Richland Co in the State of Ohio, is twenty years of age, six feet -- inches high, Sandy complexion, grey eyes, Auburn hair, and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer."...
"Station:---United States General Hospital

Jason must have recovered his health, for he was listed on the "MUSTER ROLL of Captain JAMES MCLELLAN'S Company B ... Kansas State Militia ... from the EIGHTH day of NOVEMBER 1862, to the TWENTY-NINTH day of FEBRUARY 1864." "21 Finnicum, J.L." joined and was sworn in "1863 Sept 19" in "Douglas Township" by "J.McLellan". He had 1 horse in service.
Later he and his brother-in-law, Joseph Fitzsimmons, were listed on the "MUSTER ROLL of Captain J.L. FINNICUM, Company B, of the TWENTIETH Regiment, Kansas State Militia, Colonel J.B.HUBBEL, from the TENTH day of OCTOBER 1864, when last mustered to the TWENTY-NINTH day of OCTOBER (INCLUSIVE) 1864." "J.L.Finnicum Capt." joined and was sworn in "1863 Sept 19" in "Douglas Tp. Jackson Co. Kansas" by "J.McClelan" and ordered into active service "1864 Oct. 10" at "Holton Kansas" by "Gov. Carney" and relieved from duty "1864...Oct. 29" by "Brig. Gen. Byran Sherry" with "20" days of actual service. Present was "J.L.Finnicum" with remarks, "Promoted to Capt. Aug. 9, 1864 vice Capt. Carney" and relieved from duty "1864...Oct. 29" by "Brig. Gen. Byran Sherry" with "20" days of actual service. Present was "Joseph Fitsimmons" with remarks, "Stop for 1 haversack".
The 1865 Kansas census enumerated Jason's household in the same dwelling with Mary P. and her new family with Joseph Fitzsimmons. The entry is from Jackson Co., Douglas Twp. P.O. Holton. At Dwelling 359, Family 381 is the family of Joseph Fitsimon. At Family 382 is Jason's household.
Finnicomb, J. L. is age 24, a male, a farmer, born in Ohio.
Cath is 17, a female, born in Mo.
Jason's family was later recorded by the 1870 U.S. Census. The entry is from Georgia Twp., Jasper Co., Missouri, dwelling #89, family #97.
Finicum, Jason is age 29, male, white, Farm Hand, born in Ohio.
Mary C. is age 23, female, white, Keeping House, born in Mo.
Walter S. is age 5, male, white, born in Kan.
Freddy is age 2, male, white, born in Mo.
Also in Dwelling #89 but family #96 is, at the same time:
McCoy, Sarah, age 70, female, white, Housekeeping, bornin Pa.
This Sarah is apt to be a relative of Mary's, probably her mother.
Jason L. Finnicum was counted in the 1880 U.S. Census in Fawn Creek Twp., Montgomery Co., Kansas according to information supplied by Mrs. Charlotte Eberhard of 180 Sharon Circle, Athens, GA 30606. Mary Catherine had died; Walter S. Finnicum was 14, Frederick J. Finnicum was 12, and Mark Paul Finnicum was 9.
Jason's son, Mark Paul Finnicum, survived to carry on the family name, according to information that Charlotte Eberhard found in the LDS IGI. Mark Paul Finnicum married Inie Humphery on 1 Jul 1900 in Deaf Smith, Texas. Jason Junis Finnicum was born Feb 1901 in Tucumcari, Quay, New Mexico to Mark Paul Finnium and Inie Humphrey. Charles Fredrick Finnicum was born 18 Mar 1902 in Tucumcari, Quay, New Mexico to Mark Paul Finnicum and Inie Humphery. Robert Finnicum was born 1905 in Dawson, Colfax, New Mexico to Mark Paul Finnium and Inie Humphrey. Donald Walter Finnicum was born 8 Jul 1907 in Dawson, Colfax, New Mexico to Mark Paul Finnium and Inie Humphrey. Ada May Finnicum was born 1909 in Dawson, Colfax, New Mexico to Mark Paul Finnium and Inie Humphrey.
Mark's daughter Frances (Fanny) Finicum was recorded living with his daughter Mary in 1865. The 1865 Kansas census enumerated Mary P. and her new family in the same dwelling as her brother, Jason L. Finicum. The entry is from Jackson Co., Douglas Twp. P.O. Holton. At Dwelling 359, Family 381 is the family of Joseph Fitsimon.
Fitsimon, Joseph is age 41, a male, a farmer, born in Pa.
Mary is 28, a female, born in Ohio.
Griff (?) [Thomas ?] is 17, a male, (Reg. 5 Co. M), born in Iowa.
Joseph is 10, a male, born in Iowa.
Mary is 8, a female, born in Iowa.
Finnicomb, Fanny is 19, a female, born in Ohio.
Fanny was married to William G. Alexander 27 Mar 1869. The entry from Marriage Books C and D from Jasper County, Missouri, records the marriage of "Elaxander, Wm G Fannie A Finnicum Mar. 27, 1869 p.270 H H Ashbaugh, Methodist".
Fanny's family was recorded by the 1870 U.S. Census. The entry is from Georgia Twp., Jasper Co., Missouri, dwelling #155, family #164.
Alexander, W.G. is age 31, born in PA.
Fanny A. is age 22, born in PA.
Schuyler G. is age 2/12, born in MO.
I believe that Mark is the person recorded in this entry from "Marriage Licenses of Record Jefferson Co. KS 1855-1930 by the Jefferson Co. Gen. Soc.".
FINNICAN, N.L.Oct 101861
MERCER,SarahWINCHESTER, KANSAS
The LDS IGI as of March 1992 for Kansas lists this marriage:
FINNICAN, M.S. SARAH MERCER m. 10OCT1861 JEFFERSON [Co.].
Mark was recorded by the 1865 Kansas state census. The entry is from Jefferson Co., Oskaloosa Twp., Cook's Ford, dwelling #31, family #33.
Finnicum MS is age 65, male, a Trader, born in PA, and married.
S is age 49, female, born in OH, and married.
Marcer OA is age 16, female, born in OH.
Finnicum C is age 2, female, born in KS.
There are some interesting links between Mark's family, the Scott family, the Barnes family, and some other families that lived in Richland Co. Ohio and Mahaska Co. Iowa. W Scott's family is two dwellings down from the family of Mark Finnicum in the 1856 Mahaska Co. Iowa Census for Harrison Twp. This may be the family of the William Scott who appears to be Phebe Scott Finicum's youngest brother. Page 816 contains the following entry:
W Scott is 38 in age, male, married, 9 years resident in Iowa, born in Ohio, Farmer, Native voter, Owner of Land.
Martha Scott is 30 in age, female, married, born in Ohio.
Mary Scott is 8 in age, female, born in Iowa.
Page 817 continues:
Silas Woods is 20 in age, born in Ohio.
Elizabeth Scott is age 78, widow, born in Pennsylvania.
Wesley Barnes' family is not far from the family of Mark Finnicum in the 1856 Mahaska Co. Iowa Census for Harrison Twp. Page 814 contains the following entry:
Westley Barnes is 60 in age, male, married, 4 years resident in Iowa, born in Maryland, Farmer, Native voter, not Owner of Land.
Mary Barnes is 56 in age, female, married, born in Pennsylvania.
T N(?) Barnes is 29, male, born in Ohio, Farmer, Native Voter.
E J Barnes is 27, male, born in Ohio, Farmer, Native Voter.
Samantha Barnes is 22, female, born in Ohio.
Albert N(?) Barnes is 12, male, born in Ohio.
Robert McBride is 14, male, born in Ohio.
Thomas G Barnes is 2, male, born in Iowa.
J N(?) McFarland is 73, male, born in Ohio.
One wonders why E.J. Barnes is listed here rather than with his son, Jay Wellan Barnes, who is listed in Mark Finicum's household. It is unclear which Barnes is the father of Tom Barnes who was born in Iowa. Wesley Barnes and his family lived in Richland Co., Ohio near Lucy's family in 1850; listed there were Wesley Barnes at age 56, Mary at 50, Thomas N. at 27, William C. at 18, Samantha at 16, Jedediah at 13, Albert at 6, Martha McBride at 29, and the Westey children - Robert age 8, Mary J. age 7 and Thomas age 3. There were other Barnes families in Richland County so the young men in Mahaska County may be Wesley's nephews rather than his sons.
A book that I found some time ago, a History of Richland County (Chapter LX. - Washington Township) makes some fascinating links between these families that later lived in Mahaska County.
Page 600 of the book says, "The names of the early settlers, as far as can be ascertained, are as follows: ... James Sirpliss, Section 11, April, 1815; William Ayers, Section 4; ... John J. and Wesley Barnes, Section 14; ... Jedediah Smith, Section 1, 1816; ...."
On page 605 the book declares, "The first temperance society in Richland County, and indeed in this part of the country, was organized in this township. ... A meeting was therefore called on the 29th of March, 1827,... Thomas and Samuel Smith and Alexander McBride were appointed a committee to present a basis of action ... " A pledge was written to avoid the use of "ardent spirits" and to discourage others from such use. "To this were attached the names of the Smiths, including Samuel, Vernon T., Thomas, Sr., and Jedediah; Henry Mosar, Lambright Larnee, Joseph Coe, Robert McDermott, Levi Tarr, David Newlon, John and Lancelot Conwell, Joseph Reed, Alexander McBride, Henry Hull, George, David and John McFarland, Andrew Schosser, James, Richard and Robert Sirpliss, Elias Hyser and Wesley, Benjamin, John J. and John K. Barnes."
On page 606 of the book is, "The first church organization, so far as known, was that of the Methodist Episcopal, about 1823 or 1824.... The first members of this society were Wesley Barnes and wife, David Newlon and wife, John Conwell and wife, James Sirpliss, Henry Hull, Henry Moser and wife, Richard Sirpliss, Jacob Reed, George, Robert and John McFarland and their wives, Benjamin and John J. Barnes and their wives, and Mary Pollack...."
"During the slavery agitation, between 1830 and 1840, this church was divided, political matters being carried to the pulpit.... Fourteen members withdrew and organized what that called the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The McFarlans were influential in this movement. They were strong Antislavery men, as were also the Smiths and many other pioneers in that vicinity. They were prominently connected with the 'underground railway,' and assisted hundreds of slaves in making their way to Canada...."
"The members who thus withdrew and organized this church were George, Robert and David McFarland, Henry and Joseph Moser, William Scott, John Boden and the wives of all these gentlemen....".
On pages 608 and 609, finally, are, "...Washington Village was laid out where the road crosses, by John Conwell, Wesley Barnes and James Surpliss. These gentlemen own the land divided by these roads. A round log schoolhouse was the first building erected in the place....
David Coulter was the first teacher in this house, and his pupils were the Smiths, the Barneses, Conwells, Sirplisses, Armstrongs and Pollocks. Mark Finnicum started the first store, soon after the town was laid out; and Emilus Day the first blacksmith-shop...."
Mark's daughter Lucy married E. J. Barnes on 10 Aug. 1857 according to her pension application. The Weekly Oskaloosa Herald of Mahaska Co., Iowa, on August 14, 1857 reported the marriage, "On the 11th inst., at the residence of Silas Scott, Esqr., by the same, Mr. Ebenezer Barnes and Miss Lucinda Finecum, all of Oskaloosa, Kansas." Lucy had at least two children with E. J. Barnes - Maud and Lizzie Barnes.
There is an entry in the Census of 1860 that enumerates Lucy and E. J. The entry of Oskaloosa Twp., Jefferson Co., Kansas with a post office of Oskaloosa is dated 26 July 1860.
Ebenezar Barnes is age 30, male, a clerk in dry good store, born in Ohio.
Lucinda is age 26, female, born in Ohio.
Jay is age 10, male, born in Ohio.
Tom is age 5, male, born in Iowa.
Mary is age 1, female, born in Kansas.
Fanny Finicum is age 14, female, born in Ohio.
William Barnes is age 28, male, Maker of ?, born in Ohio.
I would have expected to see Maud if this were the right family; perhaps Mary became Maud or Maud was misspelled as Mary. Jay may be the Jaywellan Barnes who was living with Lucy's parents in 1850. Tom was born before Lucy married E. J.; he may be Ebenezar's son by his previous wife. Fanny Finicum may be the Francis A. Finicum of 1850, presumably Lucy's sister.
This entry in the Kansas Census of 1865 surely enumerates Lucy and E. J. The entry of Oskaloosa Twp., Jefferson Co., Kansas with a post office of Cook's End is dated 9 May 1865.
Barnes, E.J. is age 36, a white male, born in Ohio.
L is 31, a white female, born in Ohio.
Finnicum F is 17, a white female, born in Ohio.
Barnes J W is 14, a white male, born in Ohio.
T G is 10, a white male, born in IA.
M is 6, a white female, born in KS.
E is 4, a white female, born in KS.
Hartshorn B is 16, a black male, born in KY.
Mark's family was recorded by the 1870 U.S. Census. The entry is from Georgia Twp., Jasper Co., Missouri, dwelling #96, family #104.
Finnicum, M.S. is age 70, a druggist, born in PA.
Sarah is age 52, born in OH.
Clara A. is age 7, born in KS.
The death records of Mark Finicum have not yet come to light. The last record for him is the 1870 census entry for Mark and his young family.

This story of the life of Mark would never have been written without the help of Mrs. Norma Jane Daniels, the recently retired librarian of the Kansas Genealogical Society. She was the first to tell me that my great-grandmother's name was Lucy Finicum. She encouraged me when I was just starting to research Lucy's family. She has sent many mailings of fascinating information about my Kansas family in response to my queries. I cannot possibly thank her enough.
