Re: Fitch Castle revisited
We visited what remains of the site of Montfitchet Castle in Stanstead, Essex, in 2005. While only a couple of piles of rocks remain of the original structure, a living museum has been built on the site. You can see pictures and a video if you google Montfitchet Castle.
I am still researching reports of a "Fitch Castle of the North," whose existence is supposedly fictional. If I understand correctly, it was mentioned in connection with one of the descendants of the original Montfitchet Castle.
My grandmother originally told me about the castle. Her brothers traced our ancestry back to William the Conqueror's relative, who, in 1066, was given Montfitchet Castle. One of my great-great grandmothers, I believe, was a Fitch.
Have fun being a heiress! When we were there, I wore a long dress, and strolled the grounds, pretending to be a princess:)
