As a Floyd researcher you have probably seen many of my posts in the past. Especially the lengthy ones trying to sort and make sense of the early Floyds in what is now Horry County, SC.
The many Frederick Floyds have been a challenge to some degree. So, once again, I plan to focus on at least two of Horry's finest Fredericks.
As we all know, Frederick Floyd, Sr born about 1769 settled in Horry County in about 1785. Parents unknown and wife unknown! Frederick was deceased by the time the Census was enumerated on Monday, August 7, 1820. A Sarah Floyd, Widow, is now on the Census as Head of Household. Frederick also had a son named Frederick that was born about 1813/1814. We also know that one Frederick married Sarah Pitman from Robeson County, NC and moved to McNairy County, Tennessee.
Frederick, Son of Frederick, born about 1813/1814 according to the Census married Susannah Elliott. Some say this Frederick was the Son of Hugh Floyd. I disagree! This Frederick, according to Census tracking, lived on his Farm right beside his brother's (Wright Floyd) Farm and on land that once belonged to their Father, for their entire lives.
Frederick and Susannah (abt 1816) had many children. The family resides in dwelling 757 right next to dwelling 756 (Wright Floyd). According to 1860 Census they are as follows: 1)Joseph B.age 25 2)Asburyage 16 3)Hardeeage 18 4)Samuelage 14 5)Gurdineage 13 6)Himerickage 11 7)Doctor C. (what a name)age 8
Also residing in the home were: 8)NancyAge 23 ? is Nancy a child of Frederick? 9)Zander G. Age3 ? is this John's child? 10)John Mincy ? What is he doing there?
I have also seen a family tree that lists Elizabeth (Nancy?) as a child.
In 1870 Frederick is married to a much younger woman, Nancy Jane Ayers, born about 1842. Susannah is said to have been deceased years earlier. Only one child is listed in the house. 1)Asburyage 25
In 1880 Frederick is now 68 and no longer lives beside his brother Wright. Apparently Wright and his wife, Demaris have died. They appear nowhere in the Census. Frederick is still married to 38 year old Nancy Jane and with the following children: 1)Augustusage 23 Is Augustus P. and Zander G. the same person? They are the same age! 2)Asburyage 35 3)Fannieage 16 4)Lillyage 12 5)Addie C.age 11 6)Budd N.age7 7)Jennieage6 8)Johnsonage4 9)Markage1
Not listed in the Census but on a family tree is Frederick T. Floyd born 28 Jun 1871 and deceased 20 Mar 1928. He would have been 9 during this Census.
My Grandfather was born in Floyds Township in 1904. he was the son of Charles Wilson Floyd, son of James Ervin, son of Wright. They later moved to Marion County in the Lake View area. In 1919 they moved to the Barnesville area of Robeson County, NC. He remembered Mark and Jennie. Although they would have been his Cousins, he referred to them as Aunt and Uncle. He also thought that maybe Mark went by Bud but I'm sure he was just vaguely remembering Budd himself. I said all that to point out the close relationship of the families. The sad thing is that once my grandfather left SC at the age of 15 he had little or no contact with family that remained in SC. That includes one of his brothers.
The questions I have are obvious and pointed out above. And, if you disagree, please let me know. I love a good genealogical debate. It helps sort the mistakes and hopefully solve the mysteries.
