Re: Origin of Flud surname?

The names Lloyd, Floyd, Flood, Flud, Fluit and several other less common variations all stem from the Welsh Lloyd which means "the grey-haired (hoary) one" and was pronounced as a slurred SSCHLOYD in the dialect around the year 1500. When the English Monarch and the Lords of the day ordered all their subjects to adopt the english system of having a christian name AND a surname those welsh tribes which complied named their leaders Lloyd (which also meant 'the venerable one') subsequent generations of Lloyds, and their subject serfs, had their name translated from Welsh gaelic into the various Fl--- variations depending on how the Sschloyd sounded to them in Cornwall, Shropshire,or any of the other locales bordering Wales.

Thus, many of the Welsh Lordships bordering on England created 32 distinct Lloyd coats of arms for their nobility, all in a short time about 1550. And thus the Floyds stemmed mostly from the East of Wales while the Fluds (subsequently spelled Flood) came from the south, across the Bristol Channel. Many of the earliest Floyds who served the English Monarchs originally came from the Lordship of Powys, now a part of Montgomeryshire. My ancestors are among them. WTF.
