Jim, I went to the Antioch Cemetery located outside of Cobden, Illinois last weekend and found the tombstones of my Sarah P. "Fly" Krantz. The stone definitely shows P. as the middle initial. Her stone in relationship to J.J. Deming and his father John Treat Deming were almost in a straight line from each other going from the front of the cemetery where Sarahs stone was to the middle of the cemetery where J.J. Demings stone was on to the rear of the cemetery where John Treat Demings stone was located. I then went to the library located on the campus of the University of Southern Illinois in Carbondale where the census and newspaper copies were on microfilm. I found no mention in the papers concerning the death of Sarah P. Krantz. HOWEVER in earlier research I did find in the 1850 Census, Tenn. the following: Krantz, Michael, age 35 Krantz, Sarah, age 29 George W. Harris, age 5 Lavina 4/12
I remain a bit confused with my Sarah "Fly" Krantz being Sarah (age 38) and with Michael age (45) as his wife and the correct children in the 1860 Ill. census and exactly ten years later in the 1870 Ill. census her being listed with Michael as his wife but being called Lourinda, age 48 with the same correct children. Combine that with her middle initial "definetly" being "P" on her stone and I'm puzzled!!
I did find on the front page of the Daily Free Press dated Monday March 7, 1921, the week after Eliza Fly Krantz died, her obituary which basicly told us nothing. But here it is:
"WOMAN DIES HERE AT AGE 96 YEARS" As far as is known Carbondale's oldest citizen is dead. She is Mrs. Eliza Krantz, who died within 4 years of century mark- 96 years of age. She was buried at Oakland Cemetery yesterday. Mrs. Krantz came to Carbondale from Union Co. three years ago. She leaves no immediate relatives having no children, although is survived by nieces and nephews. She was married at the age of 50, forty six years ago. S.J. Anderson with whom she made her home in her declining years was adopted by her when a child, later he adopted her and took care of her until death."
My previous source on Eliza Fly Krantz being the Carbondale, Ill. deaths 1877-1952 shows: Krantz, Eliza (w) born 14, May, 1825, TN died March 5, 1921, Carbdonale. Buried Oakland Cemetery. Spouse Michael Krantz.
Also Jim, the Illinois census, Cobden precinct, June 16, 1900 shows Eliza living with this Anderson as a foster mother and shows her being the mother of 1 child with no children living now, gives Tenn. as her birth place and gives Virginia as the birth place of her father and Tenn. as the birth place of her mother. Shows she could not read or write.
Also my research in Salt Lake City to which I am going back October 13th this year shows from the Union co. Illinois Probate Records 1856-1868:
DEMMING, John T. died in 1857: Administrator: John J. Demming, $2000 bond, 23 Nov. 1857, with Jehu Noel and Lorenzo P. Wilcox as securities. NOTE; IT GOES ON WITH MUCH MORE AND WILL SEND THIS TO YOU IF YOU WANT IT BUT WILL SKIP HERE AND PICKUP HERE: Purchasers at sale: John J. Demming, Isaac Grammer, Siras Al. Demming, William Demmilng, Harvey Demming, Harmon F. Whitacre, Aaron Treece, William Rendleman, James Tygett, Jehu Noel, John Daniel, Mrs. Cocran,MICKLE KRANTZand many more.
So, Jim, it is my intention of going to the correct folks and getting a copy of the death certificate for Eliza Fly Krantz, since she died in 1921 this should be no problem and perhaps trying to obtain a copy of the death certificate for Sarah "Fly" Krantz.
Then, if we are lucky and parents are listed there,we will have some "legit" info.
Just as soon as I get that info along with anything that I find in Salt Lake City next month, I will send it to you "forthwith"!!
