William Alexander 'Bill' Fly Jr., 80, of Searcy, born Jan. 28, 1924, was called home by the Lord on Monday, March 1, 2004, following a six year struggle with Multiple Myeloma (bone marrow cancer). He was born and reared in Hugo, Okla., and attended Abilene Christian College for one and a half years prior to service in World War II. He later graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a B.S in Business Administration. He lived most of his life in California where he was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, and served as an elder for a number of years in the Martinez, Calif., church. He was retired from the State of California Employment Development Department and was an active member of West Side Church of Christ, Searcy.
He served honorably in the U.S. Army in World War II including service in the Philippines and Japan in the Americal Infantry Division, Corps of Engineers.
Surviving is the love of his life, his wife of 56 years, Marilyn Poynor Fly of Searcy; one son, James E. Fly and wife Carol, of Batesville; two daughters, Kathleen Fly Fuller and husband Drew of Fairfax, Va., and Nancy Fly Baldwin and husband Mike of Buffalo, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Jennifer Fly Nutt and husband Steven and children Derek and Avery of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Jonathan Fly of Manhattan, N.Y.; Wendy Fuller Stetzinger and husband Andy and children Daniel and Emily of Orlando, Fla.; Jason Fuller and wife Carla and daughter Sophia of Searcy; David Fuller and wife Laura and children Anastasia and Elizabeth of Jacksonville, Fla.; Nicole Posey of Albany, N.Y.; Chad Posey of Albany, N.Y.; three step-grandsons: Ross and Andrew Baldwin of New York and Scott Baldwin of Virginia; a sister, Tommie Jo Fly Walker and husband Lionel of Edmond, Okla.; a brother, James L. Fly and wife Betty of Tahlequah, Okla.; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, all of whom he dearly loved.
He was brother-in-law of Mildred and Al Bowman of Ozark, Ala.; Martha Hodges of Searcy, and the late Bill Hodges; Keith Rohr of Princeton, Texas, and the late Margie Blythe Rohr. He was also related to LaVerne and Venton Beach of Tullahoma, Tenn.; Marilee and Bob Coker, and Marvin and Judith Crowson, all of Searcy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William A. Fly and Kate Knox Fly; an infant brother, Bobby; and stepmother, Faye Knox Fly.
Visitation will be Wednesday, March 3, from 5-7 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home of Searcy. Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at West Side Church of Christ, Searcy. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Searcy.
