My gt. grandfather was Axom D. Farmer born abt 1828 to 1830 (depending on what document you're looking at)in Robertson Co., TN died June 27, 1908 in Tillamook Co., OR.
There is a biography on him in Portrait and Biographical Record of Western Oregon, Chapman Publishing Company, 1904 which in part says:
"He was born in Robertson Co., TN, October 17, 1829 and his father Benjamin was presumably a native of the same state, the latter was a cooper by trade, an occupation followed in Tennessee until his move to Wayne Co., IL in 1838. As was the case with all tradesmen in the early days, one occupation did not suffice and the mechanic was of necessity, master in departments of activity, including carpentering, millwrighting and others equally useful. Benjamin Farmer lived only a year after the move to Wayne County and died a comparitively young man. His wife Kisira (Fly) Farmer, died in Williamson Co., IL, in 1901 having attained the age of 90 years. Her husband comprised two sons and one daughter, of whom Axom is the oldest. As a youth of 9, Axom D, Farmer accompanied his parents to Wayne Co., IL and he there grew to manhood on a farm receiving limited education in the nearby school. In time he moved to Union Co., IL where he married Betsy Daniels who bore him a daughter now Mrs. W. T. West (Mary), of this county. He afterwards married in Williamson Co., IL, Mrs. Eliza McGinnis, who was born in IL, and who died on the homeplace in Tillamook County in 1898. Of thissecond marriage there were born three sons, Frank, Lewis deceased and Otis on the home farm".
On the 1840 census for Wayne Co., IL is Kessiah Farmer with 1 male under 5, 1 male 10 to 15, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20 to 30 and 1 female 30 to 40.
On the 1850 census for Southern District, Jackson Co., IL there is James Fly age 38 b TN, Keziah age 40 b TN, Axom age 22 born TN, Louis F. age 14 b TN and Mary age 12 born TN
These are the first 3 children on the 1850 census listed with James and Kessiah. All born in TN but I think they should have the last name of FARMER. Go back in and look at the 1850 census. I believe that the first child is "Axom" not Atlena.
Axom age would fit the 1840 census for Kessiah's household, so would Louis F. and so would Mary. It also fits with the bio info from above Kessiah's children.
And interestingly enough Axom's first child with first wife (Elizabeth Daniels" is named Mary and his third son with his second wife (Eliza Menees) was Lewis.
On the 1870 census for Twp. 10, Range 1 Williamson Co., IL there is James Fly and Kisiah Fly in dwelling 160 family 160 and next door who I believe to be Kessiah's grandaughter. Dwelling 161 family 161 Walter West age 25 born WI, Mary age 18 born IL and Ashly age 2/12 born IL. This family moved to Tillamook Co., OR with her father Axom Farmer.
So this is the first time I have been able to come up with a reasonable expalanation of James Fly wife Kessiah. I believe her to be the wife of Benjamin Farmer. I do not know what her maiden name would have been. I do not know if she married a Deming in IL.
Please provide me with information if this isn't Kezziah (?) Farmer Fly. I have been researching this family since 1986.
