It looks like we have a NEW cousin on the Fly-Forum. HI Betty!
Bonnie is right on target for you, Betty, with regard to John Dixon Fly and Sally (Woodard) Fly the parents of Enoch Fly. They arrived from Northampton Co., NC in time for Enoch's birth that year, so 1799 is when your pioneering Fly ancestor arrived in Davidson Co. In 1803 he bought 100 acres of (Davidson) property. In 1804 he helped found the Rock Springs Baptist Church just over the line in Rutherford Co., near the point where Davidson, Williamson and Rutherford come together. Today it's a Church of Christ, but still functioning.
Sally's father, Micajah Woodard, was a revolutionary war soldier.I have seen DAR papers on him as the recognized participant.John Dixon Fly was paid NINE pounds coin of Virginia for HIS services.
John Dixon Fly, b. ca. 1765 was the first son of John Fly, sen'r. b. ca. 1744. He was one of the children with whom the Northampton Co. Court settled matters in 1808, some four years after John, sen'r. died in 1804. It took that long for the Commission to report the equitable settlement they worked out. John Dixon Fly had a younger brother Enoch, b. 1776, so your ancestor was named for his uncle Enoch, without a doubt."Down generation" there was yet a THIRD Enoch, whom I knew personally, having looked him up when I began genealogical work in 1958.He was a very nice gentleman. Very genial personality. He and his wife had only daughters. The Fly name did not continue in that line after Enoch Dortch Fly died.
I agree with Bonnie on MOST of her details in regard to the children of Enoch and Mary (Harwood) Fly. I have seen "I.P. Smallman" for the husband of Elizabeth A. M. Fly, but I was persuaded by other indications that the mans name was "I. P. Simmons". I believe that I got that information from a letter from Nathaniel Forbes Dortch to Marian Prescott Brown about 1933.Dortch, the writer, was a NEPHEW of the couple. I think it was HE who gave the "Simmons" correction. The "Smallman" reading, I believe, is in the official records; and it would understandibly be in the material Bonnie found. She is EXCELLENT at research work on whatever line interests her. You, Bonnie, can take a well-deserved bow.We appreciate you and your work.
The OTHER item I must offer is an out and out correction, rather than an interpretation of someone's handwriting, taken to read "Smallman" when it should have been read "Simmons".
Catherine Ridley Fly was born 13 Nov. 1842 and she died 6 Dec. 1847.She should NOT be confused with the Catherine Fly, daughter of Asher Pipkin Fly in Missouri who married Rufus Howerton.THAT Catherine was born in 1830, and is out of place in your Davidson Co., TN. setting. I have a photograph of Rufus Howerton in my collected records, made available to me by his descendant Dennis Howerton, I believe.I have had considerable contact with Cousins in this branch of the family under Catherine and Rufus. I am certain of my material here. (I wryly recall that Tom Lincoln once observed that the "worst thing in the world is to be absolutely certain and ALSO WRONG."This time I'm gonna be O.K. sticking my neck out thus.
My records (and Bonnie's) show Mary H. Harwood for your ancestor, but you use the name Mary Murray Harwood.Would you be willing to tell us more?Is our "H" a mistaken "take" on a written "M"?Can you shed light on this? Are you telling us on good authority that she had a middle (given) name "Murray"?
I show Mary's father as William H. Harwood and HIS wife as Sarah "Sally" (Grizzard) Harwood. Can you supply the name for HIS middle "H" ?
Do you have other interests in the Flys?I have some 11,000 names of Flys and Fly-related people in my data base.I provide my contact information below.
