You are doing fine with your copyings of Clarence Michaels' book.GOOD reproduction; minimum typos.Great service to those of the family with interests you are touching. Keep up the good work.
I want to offer a correction of interpretation by somebody. I don't know WHO made the error before you saw the text it is contained in. It is NOT your error, I feel confident.
It pertains to the copy of the Elisha Fly, b. 1811 Bible that is labelled in the posting, "Ann Fly's Bible- William Anderson Fly's Bible." It is actually Elisha and Ann Fly's Bible; and it undoubtedly was passed through the hands of William Anderson Fly.What I'm saying is true if my assumption is correct that this is the SAME Bible that I have photocopies of the original text.
The title page says, "Published in 1851 by Lane and Scott, New York". The "Deaths" page says, "Jeremiah Fly Dsc this life November the 17th A.D. 1846" "Zilpha Fly Dsc this life................... There is NO ENTRY of date beside the entry of the name, only dots in anticipation of a later entry. The dots were apparently to reserve space for her entry under Jeremiah's entry.I did not find reference to Jeremiah's entry or Zilpha's in the posting.
Below, it (what I'm looking at) enters, "Anna Fly Deceased this Life August the 27 day 1871"
Below that is entered, "Elisha Fly Deceased this Life Aprile (sic) the 23 day a bout 6 oclock in the evening A.D. 1877" (sic)
I'm looking right at a photocopy of this text.
I can only assume that Clarence Michaels must have reorganized the material somewhat if he, indeed, was looking at the Bible that I have copies of.
But the MISTAKE I speak of is THIS. The posted information that, Elisha Roden Fly died on 26 February 1879 should be reported as, "Elisha RODEN, (twin brother of Elijah RODEN") died on that date. This RODEN was the twin-son issue of the daughter of William Fly, b. 1799 named Nancy Matilda Fly, who married James Roden. There were FOUR sons born to this union before the twins. The marriage was ca. 1840/41.
When Nancy died, apparently in childbirth, the twins went into the household of their great uncle Elisha Fly and wife Ann. James Roden remarried, but the twins remained in Elisha's household and moved with him to Wright County, MO. where they lived to maturity; then Elisha Roden died in 1879. The twins were born 4 January 1850 in Barry Co.
For the record, the Bible I describe, that was owned by Luther William Fly and wife Mamie (Gurley) Fly after Luther made a pilgrimage from Wichita, KS to the old boarded-up frontier log-cabin in Wright Co. and there he broke into the old structure to find the Bible in a steamer-trunk-like box.He took it back to Wichita and had reverse-image photocopies made of the pages he found. These he shared with me in the reverse form, white writing on black background.I had them re-reversed to normal for about $150.00.
About two years back I asked Fenton Gurley Fly, (their only son) a Music Professor here in Montgomery, if he possessed the old Bible. He did not know of its existence; and with both parents deceased, he says it MUST be irretrievably lost.I gave him copies of my copies of the data-pages.
This is Mary Lou Hill's branch of the family.
Of further interest the second marriage of James Roden was to Mary Ann (unk.) Miller Roden and the third was to Nancy (Johnson) Soloman Roden.
I'll be glad to respond to interested inquiries when I recover somewhat from Mary's death. Her interment-of-cremains had to be delayed today on account of the Cold-storm.Family travel from Birmingham was not advisable today. We cancelled and re-scheduled the graveside service at 10:30 this morning.
I am trying to stay busy to keep my mind off my loss.
But I do thank ALL of you for your kind condolences, sent to my e-mail address. I am very grateful for your prayers and moral support.
