I believe it is correct to say that the words we are reading from your transcript of the Clarence Michaels book in the above and probably in several, if not all, of the other transcripts are the words of John James Fly, son of James Carroll Fly, son of John Richard Fly. It helps to be able to put oneself into the right relationship the better to understand what is being said.
I have some information that was apparently NOT in possession of John James Fly, the presumed writer. For part of it we are indebted to Tom Lincoln's researches and in recent times part of the information comes courtesy of Jack Allen Fly of Grain Valley, MO. who found the grave of Andrew Jackson "Drew" Fly in Hatch Cemetery, Uniontown, KS. Jack has been remarkably successful in getting answers and providing helpful information, which he has most generously shared with me and others.
I will state the known facts, and the reader can go to the above text and make his own additions and corrections.
Andrew Jackson "Drew" Fly (my number 673)was born 17 July 1834. (Tombstone)He married Lydia Holt on 27 April 1856 in Bourbon Co., KS (Marriage Record) and died on 18 July 1862. (Tombstone)He is buried in the Hatch Cemetery, about 1.5 mi. s/w of Uniontown, KS. The cemetery census mistakenly listed him as "Ely" instead of "Fly". Jack Allen Fly has kindly sent me a copy of the headstone which he "chalked" before taking a photo for the records.(Jack is a GREAT genealogist.)I have described for others that Jack and a work-party of his forming, including a son and daughter-in-law and others, restored the Jeremiah Nicholas Fly Family Cemetery,(Barry Co., MO.) re-setting fallen stones, "bush-hogging" the overgrowth, etc.) The widow of Andrew Jackson "Drew" Fly remarried the next year after Drew's death. As Lydia Fly she married one Jacob Anderson in 1863 also in Bourbon Co., KS.
The other piece of information has to do with the Phoeba Jane Fly (daughter of John Richard Fly) that John James Fly, author of your transcript quoted in the Clarence Michaels "Fly Family History", was unable to tell anything about and surmised an early (childhood) death for Phoeba Jane. Phoeba Jane has my number 679. She was born 3 Nov 1847 and she married Isaac Brown on 15 January 1865 in Bourbon Co., KS.Various records alternately refer to this name as Feribee, Phoebe and other variants.
In resume' therefore, since BOTH Andrew Jackson Fly and Phoeba Jane (Fly) Brown reached marriageable age, we must disregard the supposed childhood deaths posited by John James Fly in the referenced account of the children of John Richard Fly. It is hard to know why there was such a blank in the awareness of family members that led to the now-apparent inability of John James to tell us something about Drew Fly and Phoeba Jane (Fly) Brown.
You, Darlene, continue to do a fine job in posting (ever so carefully so as to avoid typos) the materials you are providing to the Forum.Go girl! Keep up the good work!
