Nancy Melinda Fly
Nancy Melinda, I never knew.It seems that she was married in Kansas to a farmer by the name of Stubblefield, and she and her husband crossed to California with Grandfather's family. They remained here but a short time and then journeyed to New Mexico.I am told that there are several children by this marriage. It is presumed the"Stubblefield" mentioned on Grandfather's record was Nancy Melinda's oldest son.Stubblefield died in New Mexico years ago.She next married Thomas Shoup of Maxwell, New Mexico.I have the record of only one child by this second marriage. His name is Martin Shoup, and he resides in Denver, Colorado.Aunt Melinda passed away several years ago but the husband survives and is a prosperous rancher at Maxwell, New Mexico.
John Wesley Fly
John Wesley was married after coming to California, but his wife's maiden name I cannot recall. It seems that she and John Wesley lived together but a short time before they separated, he going to Sacramento and she, as we understood, to Los Angeles.I knew but little about this uncle and never heard what became of him, but our family concluded years ago that he had died.Neither did we ever hear of what became of his wife.
Sarah Ann Fly
Sarah Ann was married to Thomas Rhodes after grandfather came to California.Mr. Rhodes was at that time studying law.He graduated later as an attorney and spent the rest of his life practicing law in San Luis Obispo County, alternating between Paso Robles and San Luis. While a capable attorney, it seems that he was not a success financially.A few years after the death of Aunt Sarah Ann, and after he had taken a second wife, he committed suicide. His second wife survives but where she is and what her maiden name is I do not know. He was cremated, and at his request, I am told, the ashes of his body were scattered upon the grave of his first wife--Aunt Sarah Ann--who was buried at San Luis Obispo.Aunt Sarah had five children all of whom are now dead except Alice, now Mrs. Alice Lincoln of Los Angeles, whose husband is a carpenter in that city. The names of the other children of this aunt were: Richard, Willie, James, and Minnie.Richard was married and has left a large family of children who, with their mother, live at San Luis Obispo.
