Some history of Chickamonga Cherokees. They were in the area that became part of Georgia, N.C. & Alabama & Tenn.
The United States does not recognize them because they refused to be removed to Oklahoma. They were allies of the U.S. at one time. There was a very vicious battle that our government would not have won without their help.Davy Chrockett was also in this battle. He said the brutallity in this battle was the worse he had ever seen. The Chickamonga's actually hacked everyone into pieces and even ate some of the parts.Davy Crockett said it made him, a seasoned figher sick to his stomach.
The government did not honor their treaty to the Cherokees.
Draging Canoe became the chif of this renagade group. They went into the mountains. They are a ligitimate people. However, the government does not recognize any tribe that did not go Ok. in the removal. The removal did not occur until about 1836 or so.To be qualified to have an Indusan Roll # you would have to connect to someone that was part of the group of Indians that were removed by the government. They do not give out Indian Roll #'s anymore.
The Indians that the government refuses to recognize have their own chiefs, such as Dragging Canoe (this is an example only) and had their own Indian Roll Numbers.Sheri White certainly would have a roll number.
Indians changed their names all the time.In their life time frame they could have been called by several names.
To say that an Elisha Sr. was called Long Knife or whatever and was or wasn't an Indian I would have to see the ligitimate records. If that is true, then John, Jeremiah, and Elisha were not Indians at all. It is documented that their father was William Fly who died abt. 1794.Jim Fly does have that proof. So does the Rev. Norman Flythe - actually that record actually came from the Rev. Norman Flythe.
