"Insel Neuwerk" Follmers
I trace my "Follmer" roots (my mother's side) to lighthouse keepers on the North Sea near Cuxhaven, now I believe part of the Hamburg government.
Immigrants to the United States in the mid-1860s settled in Brooklyn, N.Y. They did not pass through Ellis Island.
Apparently the father of 14 children at Insel Neuwerk was Peter Christian Follmer, born March 6, 1806, and married to Anna Marie Wittke (Follmer). Family lore had it that a fierce storm at one point nearly wiped out the entire family.
The Internet says that the island currently has 40 year-round inhabitants. I wonder if there are Follmers left there?
I live near New York City, where my mother's father Adolf Follmer was raised along with 11 siblings at the turn of the century. My mother passed away last year at the age of 85.
