Earl;
I have not been able to find how he got here either, but I would like to her about Margaret.
Because the Fones Clan seems to name their kids all the same, it is hard to track the right tree.Elizabeth Fones who married into the Winthrop's did have a brother named John, but he stayed in England. People get confused about this all the time.
Capt. John Fones, born about 1635, died 20 December 1703 in Kingston, Washington Co., Rhode Island; married Margaret. He was a member of the court martial at Newport, for the trial of Indians charged with taking part in the war on behalf of King Philip in 1676. He was also Deputy from 1679 to 1681, and later was Majesty's Justice of the Peace in 1683, Clerk of the Court of Commissioners, Permanent Clerk of the Court of Records of Narragansett Province, and in 1698 was Assistant and Deputy.
His father was Thomas Fownes, born about 1550 in Bristol, England, died 24 April 1637 in Plymouth, Devon, England and was buried 13 Jun 1638 in Plymouth, Devon, England. He married first about 1596 in Travistock, Devon, England, Prudence Nichols; married second Joane Heale, daughter of Walter Heale of Knaton, Devon, England.Thomas was Free Merchant of Bristol in 1599, and was Mayor of Plymouth from 1611 to 1612 and from 1619 to 1620 when the Mayflower left.
John shows up in the records of Rhode Island as the servant to William Coddington, who sold 3-900 part of Conanicut Island to a Richard Tew for a “good ewe and 6 ewe lambs or a mare colt” on June 19, 1659
