I recently purchased the subject undated studio portrait taken by Carruther's Auelia, San Jose, CA.The photographer's penciled notes on the back read:
M. B. Fonseca Niles R.F.D Box 97 Bust of each on sep card 1 1/2 Miles Sout Niles on Mission Road
I found this family recorded in the 1910 census data.Manuel B. Fonseca, born in Portugal about 1876, immigratedin 1893.His wife, Amy B., was born in California about 1886 (both her parents were Portuguese). In 1910, the family is shown as residing at Irvington, Niles County Road, leading off Niles Mission County Road, in Washington Township, Alameda Co., CA.They owned their own farm.By 1910, they had six children: George B., age 6; Tony B., age 5; Lenora B., age 4; Manuel B., Jr., age 3; John B., age 2; and Allie B., age 1.I found the family recorded in the 1920 census, then living on Princeton Road, Princeton Township, Colusa Co., CA, where Manuuel B. Sr. was engaged in rice farming.By 1920, they had twelve children.
I'm guessing that the photo depicts the couple's first born child, George B., and thus was taken about 1904.
