Dear Chris,
Glad you wrote. You have made progress, but you still have a lot of unanswered questions. Fontenots are found all over the world. I too am a Fontenot descendant. My paternal great-grandmother was Marie Victoire LaRose Fontenot; my maternal grandmother was Adelaide Simon Fontenot; another ancestor of mine was Josephine Belaire Fontenot.
LaRose (L.R.), Simon (S), and Belaire (Ba.) are Fontenot family clan names. Philippe Fontenot dit St. Philippe was a Rev. War Patriot as were two of his sons, Joseph LaRose Fontenot and Louis Fontenot. All are listed in the DAR Index.
When was your grandfather, Thomas Faye Fontenot born? Is he still living? Did he serve in WWII?
Freedom of Information Act
I have been told forms are available at the post office for requesting information on individuals who served in our armed forces.
Allen Parish, P. O. Box G, Oberlin, LA, 70555-2007, Phone: 1-337-639-4396. Call ahead for fees.
Parish clerk has marriage, divorce, probate & civil court records. You should be able to get copies of O'Neal's two marriage records and you should be able to get a copy of his Probate record. His marriage record should list his parents' names and his Probate record should list his heirs, including any children who may have pre-deceased him.
Another good place to look is the Census. O'Neal should be listed with his parents in the 1900 census. There is no printed index for this census, but you may find him listed on the Soundex Index. Soundex Index is index cards that were microfilmed. It is not hard to use. Ask your librarian for help. Be sure to copy all the information on the card so you can identify which microfilm roll you need to look at.
The Birmingham Library has a subscription to Ancestry.com online (census included) as does the Birmingham Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You library may also have a subscription.
It won't hurt to write the Teamster's Union, and you may get valuable information.
Your early Fontenot ancestors may be found in Southwest Louisiana Records by Rev. Donald J. Hebert. Fr. Hebert recorded records from the Diocese of Lafayette, plus civil records from 13 area courthouses.
Calcasieu Parish was created from St. Landry Parish in 1840. People living in this area did not move, only the parish boundaries moved. If you learn who O'Neal's father was, please write. I may already have him listed in my database.
Finally, you may want to write for information: Allen Genealoical and Historical Society, P. O. Box 789, Kinder, LA 70648.
Best Regards,
