Re: Elias Fort, Jane Hargis, Nancy Foster
Your posting got me going a bit on this Fort family.Maybe we can help each other sort some of this out.
I'm quite sure you're right that none of the children were born in Alabama. From Elias' first wife Jane Hargis, their son Urban was clearly born in North Carolina based on census information.I assume Urban's sister Emily was also born in NC but don't have relevant census information on her; do you?
I agree with you that the children from his second wife Nancy Foster were born in either Missouri (Nestor in 1828 for sure) or Arkansas (Hannah in 1836 for sure).
I just found Elias' second wife Nancy in Lee's Creek Township, Crawford County in the 1840 census; she is indexed as Forte. This is the same township where Nestor shows up in the 1850 and 1860 census (I cannot find Nancy in 1850; perhaps she remarried).
Based on information which is believed to have come from and old family bible, the following marriages of Nestor's siblings supposedly took place: Mary Fort to a Mr. Darr; Letitia Fort to a Mr. Deffenbaugh; and Hannah Fort to a Mr. Bourne. I couldn't find them in any censuses after these marriages, but perhaps you can.
