If you are talking about Fouch, Michigan, that is on the south end of Lake Leelanau, that town was settled by an African American named Smith. He stayed only four or five years. John Fouch (1844-1931) was a Civil War Veteran, and arrived there from Defiance Co., Ohio in 1866. In 1905 he built a hotel and called it Carp Lake House. It burned down ten years later. His sons were: Willy, Temple, Perry, Jesse, George William, and Harry Edwin. He also had a daughter named Ada Isabel.
