Foulkes/Leahy, Ireland, circa 1798.
The first verse of a ballad from the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland reads as follows:
"In comes the captain's daughter, the captain of the yeos, Saying "Brave United Irishman, we'll ne'er again be foes. A thousand pounds I'll give to you and fly from home with thee, And dress myself in man's attire and fight for liberty".
Author of the ballad was Robert Dwyer Joyce (no information available on him).
The captain, it is understood was Captain FOULKES of the Yeomanry, who was on the opposite side to rebels (the United Irishmen). Thisballad refers specifically to the rebellion in Wexford County.
His daughter, mentioned in line 1, is understood to have married a WILLIAM LEAHY from County Kerry, and a headstone in that area, twixt Tralee and Listowel, is believed to contain a reference to this ballad.Any further information very much appreciated.
Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir! (a thousand thanks to you all).
Seán.
