Hello to Bruce, John, and all the other researchers on this line.Long before the invention of the Ancestral File, the LDS Church compiled archives records in order to scrutinize family groups and (when necessary) censor the records.I have at hand the archives sheets for the marriages of Samuel Fowler and wife #1 Mrs Samuel Fowler, Samuel Fowler and Margaret Norman, and Robert Morgan and Margaret Norman. These sheets form the basis for the (erroneous) Ancestral File listings of the family structures presently running around on Gendex, Gencircles and other places.I note with interest my own posting on Gencircles is also in error.
Sheet for Samuel Fowler and Mrs Samuel Fowler shows the following:Samuel b abt 1618 in England, d Jan 1710; Mrs b abt 1620 and "of Salisbury", d bef 1673, no date of marriage.Ch "of Salisbury":William, abt 1654, m Elizabeth; Mary, abt 1656, m Richard Goodwin; Sarah, abt 1658, d aft 1665; Samuel, abt 1659, d 24 Dec 1737, m Hannah Worthen, and of whom issue.Information was compiled by Roy Peaslee, then of Salt Lake City, abt 1947, citing as source the Peaslee Family Records, a footnote I consider vacuous at best.
Sheet for Robert Morgan and Margaret Norman shows the following:Robert b abt 1616 in England, d 1673 at Salem; Margaret b abt 1620 in England, d 1690, no place; she is dau Richard Norman and Margaret Alford; she m 2nd Samuel Fowler.Ch, b poss at Salem:Samuel Morgan, 1637, chr 23 Jun 1650 at Salem, m Elizabeth Dixy; Luke Morgan, 1644, chr 23 Jun 1650 at Salem, nothing further; Joseph Morgan, abt 1646, chr 23 Jun 1650 at Salem, m Deborah Hool; Benjamin Morgan, abt 1648, chr 23 Jun 1650 at Salem, nothing further; Robert Morgan, 1650, chr 15 Dec 1650 at Salem, nothing further; Bethiah Morgan, chr 29 May 1653, m Samuel Weed.Information was compiled by Eunice N Crosby Bliss, then of Salt Lake City, abt 1960, citing as source the Salem VR.Bethiah Morgan and Samuel Weed apparently had early LDS descendants.
Sheet for Samuel Fowler and Margaret Norman shows the following:no change to data for Samuel; Margaret b abt 1632 and "of Beverly", no date of marriage.Ch b at Salisbury [sure!]:Samuel Fowler, abt 1674; Joseph Fowler, abt 1676; Benjamin Fowler, abt 1679; Bethia Fowler, abt 1681; Robert Fowler, abt 1684; Moses Fowler, abt 1686.Information was compiled by H L Mecham, then of Firth, Idaho, abt 1954, citing as source the Fowler Family by Stickney, p 24-26.Salisbury VR, not surprisingly, is silent on these children.
Ancestral File has conjugated these families further, postulating some unsupported marriage dates in 1641 and 1646 and scrambling the structures.Note strong parallel between children of Margaret recorded at Salem to Robert Morgan, and children of Margaret supposedly recorded "of Salisbury" to Samuel Fowler.Am I correct in my conclusion that the children are really those of Robert?
Bruce, what do pages 24-26 of Stickney really say about these children???Does anyone have Hoyt handy? And is some of this debris from Cutter?
Another Fowler researcher may have come up with the identity of wife #1, but I'll save that for my next post (waiting to hear from the author for clarification). If leads pan out, she is neither Native American nor First Nations Canadian.
Looking forward to y'all's collective responses, and feel free to e-mail me off the forum for in-depth discussions.
