Fowlers and Guy Fawkes

There's a family story that goes "The Fowlers were involved in the Guy Fawkes affair in England....." or "The Fowlers used to be named Fawkes....." the end of the story being "we had to leave the country". Of course, all the men intimately involved were jailed and/or hanged, right?

Anyone else hear this story come down through the generations in the Fowlers of the US?
