My Frain family started in Ballaghadereen, CountyMayo, Ireland.Luke Frain moved to County Durham, England c. 1850 and worked in the coal mines of the area.He met Mary Sweeney from County Leitrim, Ireland and married her on 8 Mar. 1859.They had 5 children that lived full lives and 2 that died as infants. They were John b. 13 May 1859, Mary . b.15 Aug. 1860, Luke b. 13 Aug. 1863 (my grandfather), Patrick b. 12 Jan. 1868, and Martin b. 31 Oct. 1870.
Mary married Michael Foy in 1880.
The family moved to Northern Illinois, USA in 1886.They worked as coal miners in that area.
The name was spelled Frain on the marriage certificate. On the 1861 British census the name was spelled Frayne. On the 1881 British census the name was spelled Fraine. After moving to the US the name was and is spelled Frain.
I believe I have cousins in England. When Luke left Ireland not many Frains had the given name Luke. There have been several found in England including a few born around the timeframe my family was there. My suspicion is that Luke had some uncles and cousins that moved from Ireland to England to work in the coal mines, as well.Unfortunately, I have not been able to make any connections. The Irish have a naming convention where sons are named after fathers, grandfathers and brothers in a specific order.
Whiile doing my research I found publications containing information about the name Frain and included some excerpts on my genealogy web site. You can find it if you Google 'Luke Frain'.It is titled 'Frain Family Tree - Illinois Branch'.Check the 'Frain Name Background' page.See if you can find any connection to Luke Frain and Mary Duffy in Ireland and/or their son Luke Frain in County Durham, England. If you do contact me via my web site.
