Thanks Chris for the information about your family being from Montgomery County Virginia. The name George Washington Francis is not familiar to me, BUT there is a lot I don't know about my 4th great grandparents (Captain Henry and Leah (?) FRANCIS) from Montgomery County. Here's what I know: 1. The first record of Henry Francis that I have is in June, 1756 showing that Henry enlisted in the military in February, 1756. It shows he was 5'7", sturdy built, dark haired and dark complexion, 22 years old, his "home" country was Maryland, and he enlisted in Frederick County, VA. He served in various units, including service under Col. George Washington. He had a brother 14 years older (John Francis) who also served under Washington.Henry served 6 and 1/2 years prior to discharged and attained the rank of Sergeant. 2. Another brother (William Francis) also served in the French-Indian War.According to Montgomeery County records in 1780 Henry got 200 acres of land for his service in the French-Indian War and got 50 acres of land as oldest heir and next of kin of John Francis and William Francis who were both killed in the French -Indian War.(that's 50 acres for each). 3. Henry's wife Leah's maiden name is unknown for sure. Most on Ancestry show her last name was "WATSON". I have never found anyone with proof. I think her last name may have been "HOOD". I have evidence that leads me to believe that, but not solid proof. 4. Henry and Leah had at least five sons and one daughter but there could have been others. Only two of the children have definite proof of their parentage. They are Henry Jr. (my 3rd great grandfather) and John. Henry was born 1 April 1755. It is thought that John's birth was prior to 1760 and maybe even prior to Henry's birth. Other people have claimed that their ancestors were children of Henry and Leah and I have no reason not to believe them.Other sons are: William Thomas, Charles, Samuel, and daughter Tabitha. 5. Captain Henry, Henry Jr. and John all served in the Montgomery County Militia prior to 1780 and all were in the Battle of Shallow Ford of the Revolutionary War. Captain Henry was killed in battle. Following settlement of his estate, Henry Jr., John, Samuel, and maybe Charles settled in Kentucky.Henry Jr., John. and Samuel were in Madison County, Kentucky in 1795. Henry Jr. and John then setttled in Pulaski County. John did not stay long and moved on to Wayne County where he served as High Sheriff from 1802-1813. Henry Jr. was the first jailer and obtained the first license to sell liquor in Pulaski County. He later lived in Lincoln County, KY.Samuel stayed in KY for a while then migrated to Ohio.Charles left KY for North Carolina and lived in Francis Valley near Crumpler, North Carolina.Tabitha married in Madison County, KY and later lived in Wayne County. It is not known when or where Leah died.
There are descendants of Charles Francis who think he was related to Francis' in Tennessee.I would have to research my records for details.I have not been able to find the parents or any other siblings of Henry Francis Sr.On Ancestry most show his parents were from Chester County, PA., others show Cecil Conty or Frederick County, Maryland while still others show various Virginia locations. I have not found any record that is definitive and I have not found anyone else who has proof of his parents or other siblings.I will await for information about your ancestors.Thanks.Joe
