Robert Laverne Free, 71, of Lake Jackson passed away April 20, 2002, at Methodist Hospital in Houston.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at St. Michael's Catholic Church with Monsignor Leo Wleczyk officiating.
A wake service will be at the funeral chapel at 7 p.m. Monday.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lakewood Funeral Chapel.
Military honors will be conducted by Dickinson VFW Post 6378 at the church with burial to follow at a later date at Houston National Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Robert was born June 1, 1930, in Pleasant Hill, La., to Robert Lee and Lue Watson Free.
He graduated from Pleasant Hill High School and attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., and Stephen F. Austin in Nacog-doches, on a basketball scholarship.
He went to work for Dow Chemical Co. in 1952. After serving in the Army of Occupation in Germany, he returned to work for Dow Chemical until his retirement in 1986.
Robert loved fishing and sports. He was very involved with the Lake Jackson Girls Softball Association and coached several of his daughters' teams.
He was a lifetime member of T.C. Selman VFW Post 8576 in Clute. He was past post commander of 8576 and a past Brazoria County council commander.
He was preceded in death by his patents; a son, Paul Joseph Free, and a daughter, Paula Jo Holt.
He married Patricia June Lindsey on May 18, 1956, and they had nearly 46 wonderful years together.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Free, of Lake Jackson; one son, Charles Robert Free of Angleton; four daughters: Juanita Free of Justin, Cindy Leitch and husband Bill of Freeport, Mary Hudzietz and husband Mark of Willis and Elizabeth Lobdell and husband Chris of Angleton; five grandsons: Daniel Anderson and wife Kathleen of Austin, Brad Anderson and wife Freedom of Clear Lake, Joey Free of Lake Jackson Matthew Anderson of Lake Jackson and Brian Petersen of Richwood; seven granddaughters: Desiree Free of Houston, Michele Burcham and husband Derrick Ketchum of Justin, Dawn Free of Willis, Jessica Petersen of Richwood, Tessa Hudzietz of Willis and Kayla Petersen of Richwood; five great grandsons: Tyler Free of Willis, Christopher Ketchum of Justin, Aiden Anderson of Austin, Trey Free Smith of Willis and James Paul Free-Calhoun of Richwood; one great granddaughter, Cybal Anderson, of Clear Lake; two brothers: Douglas Free and wife Rachel of Shreveport, La., and Fred Free and wife Janice of Garland; one sister, Janette Hammond, of Shreveport, La.; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, a host of friends and daughter Janice Coleman and family of Sweeny.
Pallbearers are Russ Richards, Buddi Harlan, Wayne DePute, Raymond Soley, Mike Archie, Adcario Zarate, Gary Greer and J.E. Hodges.
Honorary pallbearers are Daniel Anderson, Brad Anderson, K.W. Ford, Bertis Ford, Lance Hammond, Jason Hammond, S.T. Eidson and Robert Sanchez.
Arrangements by Lakewood Funeral Chapel.
