Hello Linda
As part of my employment I am a researcher, as such I always acknowledge sources, I also have the maxmium "To steal from one is - plagism, to steal from many - research" above my desk.
I am doing my family tree for my own personal satisfaction. If it links with others along the way and we can share the information gathered then I am happy in knowing that information which is frequently very hard to come by and in danger of being forgotten has been of use. Should anyone use that information for commercial gain then I would like to think that they would have the courtesy to acknowledge what little assistance I have managed to give.
And if anyone has information I am looking for and does not wish to share,I respect that they do not wish to share and do not push the matter.
I do not however subscribe to the idea that sharing is bad because someone might use it for their own ends.
Perhaps it is because I am new to geneology research that I feel this way, but for me the point is to discover how we fit in the family and where we came from.If I meet some people along the way who are doing something similar from their side of the tree, then I enjoy knowing that I am not the only person out there working on it.
And I figure that the exchange of information between people is a two way street.
