Frei/Frey family at Futtag/Futak/Futtog/Ufutak
Sorry for all the spellings of the family and the town, but all are commonly used, and those who use each spelling are certain it is the only correct spelling. My grandfather was baptized Francis Frey in the Catholic Church at Neu Futtag - a town of mostly Germans located in what is now Serbia. When my grandfather, later called Frank Frei, left Futtag with his parents in 1910, it was Futtag, Hungary. When his cousin left a few years later, it was Futtak, Yugoslavia. Now it is usually called Futtok, Serbia (depending upon who does the translation.)
Frank's father - Josef Frey on the original church records, was born in the same area and moved to Pigeon, Michigan with his family in 1910.Names common in both Futtag and the family include Frei - Frey - Marx - Walters - Fischler and others. Most of these same people ended up in Michigan, Ohio and Ontario.
Josef became known as Joseph Frei once he arrived in Michigan, though immigration records all say FREY.He married Julianna Walters in Futtag, they had at least 5 children before they left for Michigan, but the 2 oldest did not survive to make the trip.Frank was the oldest to emmigrate – 5 years old.His brother George was 3.The youngest of the 3 who came to Michigan was Anna Frei - probably baptised as Veronika Frey in 1910 - just before the family departed for Bremen to catch the boat for the United States.
