Harriet Agnes Fullenwider, daughter of Solomon N. Fullenwider & Elizabeth Little
Harriet N. Fullenwider, daughter of Jacob Nelson Fullenwider & Sarah Agnes Ballard/Bullard
These two ladies [first cousins] and their husbands, marriage dates, birth dates and children, are often confused with each other and sometimes even confused with another Harriet, daughter of Eleazer Fullenwider.
Harriet A. (daughter of Solomon N. Fullenwider) is often confused with her cousin Harriet N. Fullenwider, daughter of Jacob N. Fullenwider (Solomon's brother), for several reasons:
1. Harriet A. was b. abt. 1854; Harriet N. was b. 1845--it is easy to think someone accidentally reversed numbers. Both were born and lived in Sangamon Co., IL. Harriet A. is sometimes listed as Harriet Agnes and since Jacob N. Fullenwider's wife was named Agnes or Sarah Agnes, it is easy to assume she was their daughter. Harriet N. Fullenwider, Jacob's daughter, is sometimes listed as Harriet Neill/Neal Fullenwider, which either girl could be as this was their paternal grandmother's name. Jacob was the elder brother, b. 1814, m. 1837; Solomon was b. 1821 m. 1846, which makes it logical that Jacob's daughter Harriet N. would be 10 years older than her cousin, Solomon's daughter Harriet A.
2. Harriet A. is found in the 1870 census in the household of her uncle Jacob, his own daughter Harriet N. having married in 1869. Since the 1870 census does not show relationships, it is easy to think this is Jacob's daughter Harriet with a mistake by the census taker as to age. However, in all the other census' both Harriets are listed in their correct birth order, but in the 1860 census Harriet A. is out of age order, listed last after all the other children in the household, which I think indicates she is a niece, not a daughter. It is logical for her to be living with her uncle because both her parents are dead by this time and her stepmother has remarried. It would make sense for her to live with relatives rather than people who are not any blood relation to her. [Elizabeth Little d. abt. 1854, Solomon remarried 1855, he d. 1864, 2nd wife Amanda remarried 1865, so by 1870 Harriet A. is an orphan.]
3. Both girls were referred to as Hattie at times and both lived with or near Jacob N. Fullenwider. Harriet A. is listed in the 1860 census with her father Solomon as H.A. female, age 6; in 1870 with uncle Jacob, as Hattie, age 16; in 1880 with her husband George Dunnick as Harrit, age 26 and in 1900 as Hattie Dun*K41b. Dec. 1853with her husband George Dun*K. Harriet N. is listed as Harriet, age 6, with her father Jacob in the 1850 census; as H. M., age 15 in 1860 with her father Jacob; as Hattie, 25, with her husband Edward W. Bennett in 1870; as Harriet N., age 36, with her husband Edward W. Bennett in 1880, living next to her father Jacob; and as Harriet N., age 54, with her husband Edward Bennett in the 1900 census Shawnie Twp., Johnson Co., KS.
4. Harriet N.'s husband Edward W. Bennett (or a relative of the same name) was named the administrator of the estate of George Dunnick's (husband of Harriet A.) father Nicholas' estate when he died in testate.
