Fulton is Hilton in Maryland

The pronunciation and spelling of early surnames varied widely as German speaking churchmen and English scribes recorded names as they sounded to them, or as a family who could not write thought is was spelled.
In late 1700's Evangelical Reformed church records, Frederick Co., Maryland was recorded the marriage of Major Charles Baltzell (Baltzel, Balsel) to Elizabeth Hilton born 1771 died 1813.However, several researchers have her as Elizabeth Fulton.And I find in some MD records the names interchanged.The year 1800 neighbors of Charles Balzell Sr. & Jr. were Fulton.My interest is that my Elias Lefevre (Lafever Lafeber) born 1743 married an unknown Mary Salome about 1765 or 1766 who may have been a Hilton.Also that "uncle Major Baltzel raised the son of Elias (Jacob Lefever b 1785)"Also my John Lefever an older son of Elias had as adjacent households in the 1820 census, Staunton Township, Miami Co. OH two Hilton families (Due to poor penmanship and reading was recorded in records as Hitton).Later, many landowners in Miami Co. were identified as Fulton.
